Partial Characterization of a Renotropic Factor

Abstract: In 70 experiments, the existence of a circulating renal growth factor was confirmed by 9.3% stimulation of 3H-thymidine into the DNA of renal fragments incubating for 90 min in the presence of sera from 20-hour unilaterallly nephrectomized rats compared to sera from 20-hour sham-operated rats (p < 0.001). Dialysis (7.4%, p < 0.01) or removal of albumin (11.8%, p < 0.001) from sera of both sham-operated and unilaterally nephrectomized rats did not appreciably change the magnitude of the statistically… Show more

“…Retropin has only been partially characterized [18], and the site or sites of this production are uncertain [1 -3]. There has been some speculation concerning a role for renotropin in renal sodium homeostasis [11].…”

“…The maximum is somewhat later and the duration longer in rabbits and man [521]. Heat lability and a molecular size between 12 and 25 kilodaltons are consistent with a small protein as an essential component of the activity [178,255,300,301,369,402], Mitosis is stimulated in medullary as well as cortex slices [369] but liver slices are unaffected [300,305,400,403,404,488]. The stimulatory effect on cortex is interspecific between the rat, dog and mouse [369].…”

“…In summary, the vasoconstrictive factor following uninephrectomy stimulates the characteristics and the time frame of the renal growth factor in rats. 38,39 Renotropin and Sodium Metabolism Abnormal sodium metabolism plays a critical role in hypertension. Enhanced sodium ingestion raises blood pressure, [65][66][67][68][69][70][71] and abnormalities in red and white cell electrolyte concentrations are noted in the hypertensive state.…”
