Partial cricotracheal resection for pediatric subglottic stenosis: Long-term outcome in 57 patients

Abstract: Partial cricotracheal resection provides good results for grades III and IV subglottic stenosis as primary or salvage operations. The procedure has no deleterious effects on laryngeal growth and function. The quality of voice significantly improves after surgical intervention but largely depends on the preoperative condition.

“…In regard to the potential effect of laryngotracheal reconstruction procedures on swallowing function, there are reports that document transient dysphagia, direct aspiration, and the subsequent need for swallowing therapy and dietary modifications in the post-operative period [5,11,17,18]. However, the specific nature of the post-operative swallowing problems and the efficacy of compensatory strategies used in the post-operative period are not well described.…”

“…This technique slowly superseded previous laryngoplasty techniques without cartilage grafting such as the Rethi procedure (33). Usually the cartilage is harvested from the costal arch (34), however, others have described the use of the thyroid ala or nasal septal cartilage (35,36). A complete anterior laryngofissure exposes the posterior surface of the cricoid plate.…”
