Particulate Methane Monooxygenase

Abstract: Particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) catalyzes the oxidation of methane to methanol in methanotrophic bacteria. The 300‐kDa pMMO enzyme is a trimeric integral membrane protein, comprising three copies each of three subunits: pmoB, pmoA, and pmoC. Purified pMMO contains both copper and iron, although some of the iron may be due to heme contamination. The copper stoichiometry ranges from 2 to 15 copper ions per 100‐kDa pMMO protomer, depending on the enzyme source. EPR spectra of whole cells, membrane‐bound,… Show more

“…Inspired by the naturally occurring particulate methane monooxygenases (pMMO), copper-exchanged zeolites have been developed as selective methane to methanol catalysts following a three-stage process that uses air as oxidant. Multiple zeolite topologies have been shown to accommodate active cationic Cu-oxo clusters for the transformation, among which mordenite (MOR) is arguably the most widely studied zeolite.…”

“…Methane is oxidized primarily by particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO), encoded by the pmo genes (Hanson and Thomas, 1996; Hakemian and Rosenzweig, 2007; Rosenzweig, 2011) although soluble methane monooygenase (sMMO) has been shown to be functional in a few instances (Hakemian and Rosenzweig, 2007). Propane (pMO) and butane monooxygenases (bMO) have both been identified in microorganisms that can metabolize short chain alkanes (Sluis et al, 2002; Arp et al, 2007; Cooley et al, 2009; Redmond et al, 2010).…”
