Abstract:Coagulation monitoring relies on in vitro tests where the clot formation is induced using external stimuli. We report an optical method capable of revealing the propensity of coagulation based solely on the natural dynamics of erythrocytes in whole blood. In contrast to traditional techniques, our approach provides means to assess the blood coagulability without the need to chemically trigger the coagulation. Results of correlations with standard clinical methods suggest that this optical assay could be used f… Show more
“…By taking advantage of an intrapatient normalization i.e., normalization of a patient's response to their own initial conditions, one can implement differential analysis that permits a more proper inter-patient comparison. 56,59 A complete inter-patient analysis will be the subject of a future report.…”
High-frequency viscoelasticity of blood can be measured passively by optical means and described by simple microrheological models in the regime where the erythrocytes test their immediate surroundings.

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
