Path from the discovery to the elimination of hepatitis C virus: Honoring the winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020

Abstract: The Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine, in the year 2020, has been awarded to three scientists, Harvey Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles Rice, for jointly discovering the hepatitis C virus (HCV). This remarkable achievement is a huge breakthrough in the fight against hepatitis C. Most importantly, their pioneering works have successfully saved millions of lives by acting as the foundation for sensitive blood tests and effective antivirals. Inspired by the 2020 Nobel Prize winners, this review article ho… Show more

“…Based on this trial, an 8-week GLE/PIB regimen for treatment of cirrhotic patients who received no prior HCV treatment was approved by TFDA in April 2020. It is hoped that reducing treatment duration may help to address remaining gaps in the cascade of care of HCV 4 , yet there have only been very limited real-world studies of the effect of the 8-week GLE/PIB regimen on the treatment-naïve patients with compensated cirrhosis 23 , 26 , 27 . The present study demonstrated that 8 weeks of GLE/PIB achieved a high SVR12 rate (98.2%) in 110 treatment-naïve Taiwanese patients with compensated cirrhosis, supporting the results of EXPEDITION-8 8 .…”

“…In Taiwan, HCV is endemic with an estimated prevalence ranged from 3.28% among the general population to more than 10% in hyperendemic areas 2 , 3 . One of the five core interventions identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) toward eliminating viral hepatitis is to enhance and expand the response of the oral, well-tolerated direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) for people with chronic hepatitis C virus (CHC) infection, which can achieve cure rates of over 90% and thereafter avoid further transmission and reduce HCV-related complications, including decompnesated cirrhosis, liver transplantations and death 1 , 4 .…”

“…Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) globally [ 1 , 2 ]. Sustained virological response (SVR, undetectable HCV RNA PCR 12–24 weeks after completion of therapy) has been shown to substantially decrease the risk of HCC development though not complete risk elimination [ 3 , 4 ].…”

“…The overall goal of the WHO Global Health Sector Strategy on Hepatitis (2016–2021) is to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat within the framework of universal coverage [ 14 ]. In recent decades, efforts have been made in public prevention and therapeutic intervention for HCV to achieve this goal [ 15 ]. Most previous efforts to eliminate HCV have focused on eliminating HCV infection in terms of disease burden, treatment costs, special populations, and community-based outreach services.…”
