Pathogens collections, biobanks and related-data in a One Health legal and ethical perspective

Abstract: Research on emerging infectious diseases calls for a work on collections of pathogens (including hosts or vectors from which the pathogens were isolated), related to human and animal health, to wildlife or on the environmental material. In this respect, the adoption of a One Health perspective is determined by the need for a common approach to consider the collection, storage and use of pathogens coming from human or non-human sources, and particularly when the same pathogen is taken from different environment… Show more

“…Vouchered host specimens provide scientific replicability, baselines for temporal and spatial studies, correct taxonomic identification of host species (which may be later revised, e.g., see reference 71), and material for extending research using advanced technologies. Vouchering also integrates an entire community of researchers into the public health sector that otherwise would not typically collaborate (72) and provides critical expertise about the ecology and evolution of host species to support the One Health model for tackling EIDs (73). This proactive approach allows the sharing of data and expertise as well as fostering collaborations to collectively develop novel, creative insights that provide substantial benefits across diverse scientific fields.…”

“…This ultimately led to the emergence of biopiracy wherein unauthorized companies in the global North accessed genetic resources and traditional knowledge from the global South for private profit, and, ultimately, these concerns caused genetic resources to become the responsibility of the state [18]. Yet, there are different regulatory frameworks that apply to human, animal, or environmental genetic information [19].…”

“…Finally, and as emphasized above, there are important ethical and legal issues of barcoding and biobanking. These issues are comprehensively addressed by Lajaunie and Ho (2018), who provided guidelines for implementing barcode research in parasitology. None.…”
