Pathological lesions in larvae hatched from ovigerous females ofChasmagnathus granulata (Decapoda, Brachyura) exposed to cadmium

Abstract: Abstract. Morphological abnormalities were noted in larvae hatched from ovigerous females of the estuarine crab Chasmagnathus granulata, exposed to 1 and 15 rag/1 of cadmium during the egg incubation period. The highest concentration produced a significant incidence of hydropsy, atrophy of dorsal spine, pleon and pereiopods as well as enhancement of pigmentation. Some possible causes of these results are discussed and compared with the effects caused by other pollutants on the same species.

“…Although some pesticides such as parathion and 2,4-dichlorofenoxyacetic acid [9], as well 228 as cadmium [10], produced a clear decrement in the number of hatched larvae, current results 229 with atrazine show no changes when compared to control. Hence, no lethal effect of the 230 assayed concentrations of atrazine on developing embryos was evident.…”

“…In this regard, hydropsy was the 236 abnormality with highest incidence, followed by eye atrophy. 237 238 Hydropsy, namely an abnormal hydration of tissues, could be related to any alteration in 239 osmoregulatory mechanisms, as suggested to other pesticides and heavy metals [9,10]. Eye 240 atrophy, on the other hand, could have been caused through an alteration of the neural 241 innervations pathway that induces eye formation during embryonic development [15].…”

“…Two or three days before ecdysis (detectable by the light color of carapace and confirmed by setogenic molt staging), crabs were isolated in 1-L glass jars containing 250 ml of saline water (12‰ salinity). Females that became ovigerous were immediately transferred to the same kind of container, but with water having a salinity of 30‰ to insure larvae hatching, as in previous studies (Rodríguez and Pisanó, 1993;Rodríguez and Medesani, 1994).…”

“…The wounds were then cauterized by heating. Each experimental group, as defined above, was placed in a 24-L glass aquarium, containing 3-L of artificial saline water (12‰ salinity, made with dechlorinated tap water and HW Marine Mix (Germany) salts, as in previous studies (Rodríguez and Pisanó, 1993;Rodríguez and Medesani, 1994). Crabs were fed ad libitum twice a week on rabbit pellets and cow liver.…”
