Paths to developing multifunctional agriculture: insights for rural development policies

Abstract: Abstract:The paper proposes to contribute to the growing literature on the practise and significance of multifunctional agriculture, drawing on an empirical study of 50 farms located in Central Italy and Sicily. The paper intends, in particular, to identify and analyse the ways that multifunctionality can be translated into rural development models, and to distinguish the territorial and farm features that favour the development of agricultural practices whose strength lies in supplying non-market goods and se… Show more

“…Using the ideal-typical characteristics of the different patterns, the extent of the three-fold embedding was determined for the patterns of farm development. Each farm has its own way of embedding in the three dimensions as a result of the manner of using the available resources of a social, cultural, human, and natural character [46]. To estimate the extent of the embedding, a scale was used ranging from a 'Close' set of relations to a 'Stretched' set of relations.…”

“…identified four types of multifunctional agriculture: opening to the national and international market (i); developing new farm activities (ii); integrating approach with environmental aims (iii); making local markets deeper (iv). According to the authors, with respect to the multifunctional theory, different parameters should be evaluated and directly translated into rural development models [12]. In this framework, we analyzed the 276 farms located in Chieri Municipality choosing, within the Agricultural Census database, the parameters related to multifunctionality: website presence, online selling, agritourism, didactic farms, work on behalf of third parties-non-agricultural activities, maintenance parks and gardens, renewable energy production facilities and the transformation of products.…”

“…For the sustainable development of peri-urban agroecosystem, it is essential to find a methodology able to conjugate cultural, environmental and ecological values with economic and social needs [11]. In this context, according to Casini et al (2012) developing models that integrate traditional and historical farming processes with nonmarket goods and services' evaluation is a priority challenge [12]. Moreover, O'Farrell and Anderson expressed the need to translate the theoretical role of ecosystem services for guiding multifunctional landscapes in urban and agricultural systems [13].…”

“…According to Casini et al (2012), multifunctionality is a direct reflection of the extent to which local actors succeed in converting local resources into added value for the local system by formulating adequate strategies. This have expression of an overall style of living and strong impact on rural development, through the interconnection among the local actors, determined by the various activities.…”
