Since the Syrian civil war erupted in 2011, an increasing number of European youth have joined Salafi-jihadist milieus in their home countries and/or in the Syrian/Iraqi conflict zone. Some are ardent believers in ending their days as—what they perceive to be—martyrs. Others renege on their commitment, return, and resocialize into conventional society. While engagement, disengagement, and resocialization have each been explored as phases separately within the existing literature, a coherent, criminological study of how those sequences are interconnected has still not been explored in a Danish context from an empirical angle. On the basis of qualitative interviews with three Danish Salafi-jihadist defectors (for example, from the Islamic State), this article unravels the connection and disconnection between engagement, disengagement, and resocialization. The analysis is theoretically informed by David Matza’s theory of drift (1964). However, the theory does have its limitations. As the commitment to Salafi-jihadism entails more than simply an “episodic release from moral constraint”, which defines drift, the informants are only part-time drifters, and here it is argued that the informants are rather entering and exiting a spiraling vortex of Salafi-jihadism. These entries and exits are fueled by the returnees’ nurtured and fractured fantasies.

ZusammenfassungDer Beitrag stellt mit dem RADIP ein psychotherapeutisches Interventionsprogramm vor, das zum Ziel hat, das Fortschreiten von Radikalisierungsprozessen bei Jugendlichen zu verhindern (Deradikalisierung) und die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer Ausübung extremistischer Taten zu verringern (Distanzierung). Das Programm ist deliktpräventiv konzipiert und vereint forensische und kognitiv-verhaltenstherapeutische Methodiken. Es ist strukturiert und multimodal und kann im Einzel- oder im Gruppensetting durchgeführt werden. Nebst der Auseinandersetzung der Teilnehmenden mit Themen, die mit (ihrer) problematischen Radikalisierung in Verbindung stehen, beinhalten die Module Wissens- und Kompetenzzuwachs, Reflexion der eigenen Identität, Bewusstsein und Stärkung eigener prosozialer Ziele sowie Erhöhung der Entscheidungs- und Steuerungsfähigkeit (ressourcenorientierter Zugang). Bestandteil des Programms ist eine Abklärungsphase, welche eine psychiatrisch-psychopathologische und (entwicklungs-)psychologische Diagnostik sowie ein forensisches „risk assessment“ beinhaltet. Das daraus resultierende Fallverständnis erlaubt es, individuelle Schwerpunkte zu setzen und flexibel zu intervenieren. Das Programm ist in einen multisystemischen und -disziplinären Rahmen eingebettet, d. h., Eltern oder sonstige nahe Bezugs- sowie Hilfspersonen werden miteinbezogen.

This article explores the question of which factors and dynamics lead also non-religious people to join the so-called “Islamic State”. The analysis starts with the biographical reconstruction of a radicalization process in Switzerland, the results of which are linked with sociological and socio-psychological explanations from the research on radicalization and extremism. The article shows that also in the field of “Islamic extremism” radicalization processes do not necessarily have to be ideologically or religiously underpinned, and that there are therefore doubts as to the comprehensive explanatory power of the religious paradigm.
