Pathways to health: a framework for health-focused research and practice

Abstract: Public health research and practice is faced with three problems: 1) a focus on disease instead of health, 2) consideration of risk factor/disease relationships one at a time, and 3) attention to individuals with limited regard for the communities in which they live. We propose a framework for health-focused research and practice. This framework encompasses individual and community pathways to health while incorporating the dynamics of context and overall population vulnerability and resilience. Individual pat… Show more

“…Ward et al have argued that this model could be applied to a general population, whereas earlier research centred on children becoming resilient. The Ward et al model of resilience is based on an assets model of health that is focussed on health and wellbeing (Fleischer and Weber et al, 2006;Sen, 1999), as opposed to a medical model that is fixed towards illness. Bond et al have highlighted that when engaging Indigenous people with respect to smoking abstinence, wellness rather than illness needs to be emphasised (Bond and Brough, et al, 2012).…”

“…In research partnerships, the generation of evidence is directly connected with advocacy and activism [ 30 , 39 ]. People are empowered to have an influence on study design including the development of research questions [ 69 ]. For example, a participatory research design was applied in the community-driven monitoring study AirBeat on the links between high asthma rates and air pollution in a Boston (USA) neighborhood.…”

“…This concept, its effects on self-management practices and differences in resilience between individuals will be discussed later in the paper. Finally, contemporary research on resilience focuses on an assets rather than deficits model, including factors leading to wellbeing and happiness [ 49 , 50 ]. This approach attempts to understand the underlying social and psychological processes and practices, by which, resilience and ultimately improved self-management and well-being may be achieved.…”
