Patient Centered Design: Challenges and Lessons Learned from Working with Health Professionals and Schizophrenic Patients in e-Therapy Contexts

Abstract: Abstract. Patient Centered Design (PCD) is a particular type of User CenteredDesign (UCD) where the end-user is a patient that will use an Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solution for healthcare. It focuses on needs, wants and skills of the product's primary user and implies involving end-users in the decision-making and development process of the solution. e-Therapy aims to provide support to therapy sessions through ICT solutions. It has grown in the last years and in the mental health arena … Show more

“…Lately, participatory design (PD) approaches have been shown to be a useful instrument in applying a more patient-centric design. In the development of web-based support for patients with chronic health conditions, PD has, for instance, successfully been used to design web-based self-care for patients with type 2 diabetes [7], peer-support on the web for patients with rare diagnoses [8], web resources for social support for breast cancer patients [9] and in development of e-therapy for patients with schizophrenia [10].…”

“…Este último es una metodología que se enfoca en las necesidades, deseos y habilidades del paciente y lo involucra en la toma de decisiones y desarrollo de una solución de diseño. Así, el equipo de diseño busca cumplir las expectativas del paciente mediante un proceso de co-creación, apoyándolo en su empoderamiento (Reis et al, 2011). transplant patients and their families is focused in reducing the risk of KT rejection and establishing the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for people to have control over their health (Pueyo-Garrigues et al, 2016).…”

“…Human factors are one of the main disciplines in design for health (Branaghan et al, 2020). The patient-oriented design focuses on preventing or controlling a disease known to be of great importance in work-oriented approaches (Reis et al, 2011). The usability test is a one-step design experiment in which designers technically evaluate the background of a product to grasp a better design (Geisen & Romano Bergstrom, 2017;Rosson & Carroll, 2002).…”

“…However, in the patient-centered design approach, all activities move to prevent the development of the disease in a normal user and prevent the recurrence of the disease (Reis et al, 2011).…”
