Patient satisfaction with nurse practitioner care in emergency departments in Canada

Abstract: These findings indicate that attentiveness, comprehensive care, and role clarity are reflected by the NP in emergency healthcare settings as indicated by the patient's responses to the survey. This study supports that meeting expectations is a critical component of patient satisfaction.

“…[20,32] Patient satisfaction for age, gender, educational level and ethnicity had no statistical significance in our study and was also similar to the research. [16] However, age and accessibility of NP services were statistically significant, congruent with research findings on high patient satisfaction with NP care in rural Canadian family practice clinics. [9,34] Limitations of the study This study has a number of limitations.…”

“…This is consistent with the literature demonstrating that patients were very satisfied with NP health care services. [15,16,21,22,30,32,[34][35][36] Furthermore over 98% of participants would seek the services of a NP in the future. The findings also indicate that rapport building, accessibility, flexibility with scheduling and consistency of health care provider, contributed to patient satisfaction which corresponds with research findings.…”

“…Some research has been conducted to assess patient-satisfaction with general nursing care provided in the ED (Bursch, 1993;Raper, 1996Raper, , 1999Byrne, 2000;Chan, 2005;Dinh, 2012;Thrasher, 2008;Sandhu, 2009). Evidence suggests that factors such as the overall environment of an ED, duration of waiting times (Lee & Jennings, 2006;Jennings et al, 2008;Taylor & Benger, 2004) and acuity of a patient's condition can affect the patient's or the accompanying person's satisfaction with the ED services.…”

“…Growing scientific evidence suggests that NPs can enhance patient satisfaction because they are sometimes perceived by patients to be more attentive than physicians, and patients rate their interactions with NPs very positively [6][7][8]. Randomized controlled trials have supported that patient health status is higher when treated by a NP versus a physician in primary care settings.…”
