Patient with recurrence dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans: A case report

Abstract: We present a typical case of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans(DFSP) with a complaint of a painful and various recurrence, make a review of the most important aspects. This is a rare tumor and we call special attention to the fact that its recurrence is extremely frequent, so there is absolute need to observe these patients periodically after surgery.

“…Localized recurrence of DFSP is common, with recurrence rates ranging from 10-60%; the risk of recurrence is elevated in cases where surgical resection margins are inadequate. This is primarily due to the microscopic finger-like, invasive protrusions that are often observed in DFSP, which may not be appreciated grossly during surgical resection [ 19 ]. Furthermore, since surgery and scar formation are risk factors for the development of DFSP, these may contribute to the increased risk of recurrence in patients with a prior history of the disease [ 20 ].…”

“…The incidence is quite similar in women and men (4.4 vs 4.2% per million people per year) with a relative 5-year survival of 99.2% 4 . The most affected age group of DFSP is from 20 to 50 years 5 . The exact cause of the onset is not yet clearly understood.…”

“…However, DFSP grows in a locally aggressive pattern with a high rate of recurrence (20-50%). 2,3 Worse still, fibrosarcomatous transformation of DFSP (FS-DFSP) is a high-grade, more aggressive subtype with a higher risk of recurrence (55%), metastasis (10-15%, especially lymph nodes and the lung) and a worse prognosis. 4 Here, we report on a rare case of facial FS-DFSP with multiply local recurrences as well as lung and spine metastasis.…”

“…Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is a rare malignant cutaneous sarcoma, which initially presents as an asymptomatic plaque with reddish-brown, pink or purple appearance, with gradual development of protuberant nodules within the plaque. 3 An accurate diagnosis depends on histopathological analysis. Spindle-shaped tumor cells that grow in a storiform pattern and often infiltrate subcutaneous fat to form a honeycomb appearance are the typical features.…”
