Patients’ experiences with the advanced practice nurse role in Swiss family practices: a qualitative study

Abstract: Background: Considering shortages of general practitioners (GP) and strategies for improving the quality of health care provision, many countries have implemented interprofessional care models with advanced practice nurses (APN). International evidence suggests that APN care results in high patient satisfaction. In Switzerland, the role is still new, and the patient perspective has not yet been researched. Our aim was therefore to explore patients’ experiences with the APN role in Swiss family practices.Method… Show more

“…The importance of generalist, specialist and advanced practice nursing (APN) roles to healthcare systems, for improving population health, providing better quality of care and decrease healthcare costs, is demonstrated through substantive review evidence (Brooten et al, 2012; Bryant‐Lukosius & Martin‐Misener, 2016; Coster et al, 2018; Kilpatrick et al, 2014) and highlighted further by patient perception of added value and satisfaction (Jennings et al, 2015; Schönenberger et al, 2020). The World Health Organization (2015) also voices the need to optimize the introduction of specialized and advanced roles in healthcare systems.…”

“…The professional role of the advanced practice nurse (APN) has emerged as an innovative solution to health care needs, providing a high degree of knowledge, expertise and autonomy in patient care (Hutchinson et al, 2014; Krishnasamy et al, 2021; Sánchez‐Gómez et al, 2019). At the international level, implementation and regulation are uneven: in some countries, these roles have been established for decades, while in others, implementation has not yet reached its optimal level (Carney, 2016; Schönenberger et al, 2020; Westman et al, 2019).…”
