Food security is a condition that allows people permanent access to food for a better quality of life; therefore, it is a priority for the economic development of countries. In this context, this research aims to determine the importance of purchasing power and education in the food security of families in rural environments using Chambo canton, Ecuador as a case study. Considering the deductive method, the research is descriptive correlational, with a qualitative and quantitative approach. For data collection, a questionnaire based on the Latin American and Caribbean Food Security Scale was applied to 230 households out of a total of 3585 households. The results showed that the variables of number of income earners and total family income have a high relationship with food security, unlike level of schooling. It was concluded that education does not represent a decisive factor for food security in rural environments, although its incorporation as a variable is important for improving quality of life.

Revisiting food insecurity gender disparity

Previous research has shown that woman-headed households, more than man-headed ones, experience food insecurity. The purpose of this article is to contribute on the determinants that are linked to this gender disparity. Using a nationally representative dataset from Chile, we found that food security household head gender disparity is associated with marital status (having or not a partner) and household composition (having children or seniors). In contrast, gender disparity is not strongly associated with household income and household head educational differences. In this way, we expect to bring evidence to inform new alternatives that help mitigate food security gender disparity.

El uso de la tecnología ha promovido la expansión digital y el crecimiento de herramientas que hacen posible la cuantificación, medición y análisis de los datos. También ha permitido que tecnologías como la inteligencia artificial desarrollen algoritmos y modelos para que las computadoras aprendan y mejoren sus procesos por medio de la experiencia. En este contexto, el machine learning se ha convertido en un aliado en el control de enfermedades crónicas como la hipertensión arterial (hta), que causa el 63 % de las muertes de personas de tercera edad, debido a falencias en adherencia a tratamientos y a los estilos de vida de los pacientes. En este artículo se propone que implementar esta tecnología en el seguimiento del tratamiento de la hta podrá suministrar pronósticos de la condición futura del paciente y evidenciar el avance o la necesidad de un nuevo diagnóstico para mejorar su calidad de vida
