The purpose of this chapter is twofold: (1) introducing of a semantic modeling mechanism, which is applied to achieve context-based knowledge fusion in a decision support system and (2) discovery of context-based knowledge fusion patterns. An approach to ontology-based resource modeling is proposed. The set of resources comprises sources of data/information/knowledge, problem solving resources and various actors. The knowledge fusion patterns are generalized with regard to two aspects: (1) preserving internal structures of multiple sources from which information/knowledge is fused within the ontological structure of context and preserving internal structure of the context itself, and (2) preserving autonomies of the multiple sources and the context. Six knowledge fusion patterns have been discovered. They are simple fusion, inferred fusion, instantiated fusion, adapted fusion, flat fusion, and historical fusion.

This paper aims at creating knowledge value-added by exploring, and understanding knowledge about the causes, processes, and patterns of convergence innovation through a review of eight papers included in this issue. It argues that the process of convergence innovation is a continuous disequilibrium between reference technology and its matching technology, which adjusts optimal balance between the functions of the two technologies. The process of convergence innovation is also featured as a learning process that requires both vertical and horizontal convergence. Types of convergence innovation such as outsidein and inside-out, depending on market situation are discovered in some case explorations. Convergence innovation has been taking place mainly by applying IT technologies to vast areas of conventional technologies. This is because individuals or firms get benefit from the convergence between IT and conventional technologies. Such innovations made possible by convergence ultimately improve the welfare of human beings as companies can solve diverse problems or increase employment. Many examples are found in Asian industries, for instance, biochemical companies of Indonesia were able to increase their market shares in biofertilizer and biopesticide products through bio-based technological convergence. Textile machinery firms of Korea have survived by achieving convergence innovation on their core competences.

a b s t r a c tAs technological convergence has recently become a mainstream innovation trend, technological opportunities need to be explored in heterogeneous technology fields. Most of the previous convergence studies have taken a retrospective view in measuring the degree of convergence and monitoring the converging trends. This paper proposes a quantitative future-oriented approach to technological opportunity discovery for convergence using patent information. In a future-oriented approach, technological opportunities for convergence are suggested by predicting potential technological knowledge flows (TKFs) between heterogeneous fields. The potential TKFs are predicted by a link prediction method in a directed network, which is suggested in this paper to represent the direction of the predicted TKFs by adapting the concept of bibliographic coupling and edge-betweenness centrality. Converging technological opportunities are proposed as incremental and radical technological opportunities by extracting the potential increased knowledge flow links and emerging knowledge flow links. Moreover, the direction and themes of the predicted potential TKFs are provided as technological opportunities for convergence. As an illustration of the proposed method, the technological opportunities between biotechnology (BT) and information technology (IT) are explored. Firms and researchers can use the proposed method to seek out new technological opportunities from various technologies so that R&D policymakers can plan new R&D projects on technological convergence.
