Patterns and trends in Internet of Things (IoT) research: future applications in the construction industry

Abstract: PurposeThe Internet of Things (IoT) provides exciting opportunities for the construction industry to solve its time and resource constraints and frequent defaults. This study seeks to identify and rank the perceived importance level of principal research areas associated with the IoT and the construction industry by utilising a scientific mapping tool (i.e. VOSviewer). Such knowledge would enable key drivers for successful adoption of the IoT and digitisation technologies to be outlined. An analysis of key dri… Show more

“…Discussion Our findings answer calls for more innovative research which considers it as a process from multiple perspectives (Tafesse and Skallerud, 2017;Ghosh et al, 2020;Saka and Chan, 2020). They contribute a new relational dimension to the existing innovation diffusion literature in construction by specifically highlighting the potential for information asymmetries between vendors and customers in the ACT diffusion process.…”

“…With such an advancement, the "Internet of Things" (IoT) emerged as the third wave of technological and Web renaissance [12]. The IoT is characterized by data sharing and connectivity among embedded devices autonomously, where everything around us is connected in some sort [13]. Among the results of this is the emergence of sustainable cities.…”

“…The rapid proliferation of IoT-based applications has recently resulted in the definition of IoT trends with a particular focus on the industrial situation [23] [24] [25] [26] [27]. In each of these studies, the author's abstracted patterns from current IoT goods and innovations, and in some cases, split model approaches and best -practices into two groups, respectively patterns and pattern candidates (not fully formulated templates that can be promoted to patterns in the future).…”
