Patterns of cortisol reactivity in African‐American neonates from low‐income environments

Abstract: Individual differences and stability in patterns of salivary cortisol reactivity were examined in 100 African American neonates from low-income environments. A pattern of reactivity was defined by the change from prestressor to poststressor cortisol concentrations and the change following the poststressor during a recovery phase. Cortisol reactivity was measured in response to two stressors: the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS; T. B. Brazelton & J. K. Nugent) and the routine hospital heel-stick proc… Show more

“…Twelve participants completed neuropsychological and psychological testing procedures on the day of ACTH stimulation testing. Diurnal changes in cortisol are known to exist, however individual differences in cortisol response have been shown to be generally stable across days and stressors (Keenan, Gunthorpe & Young, 2002), thus data from all participants was employed in subsequent statistical procedures.…”

“…Importantly, these insights came from examining acute stress reactivity–an area that is underdeveloped in ethnic minority stress research (58). Significant main effects observed at every collection timepoint suggested divergent associations of perceived discrimination and racial identity with stress reactivity; higher levels of perceived discrimination generally predicted greater biological arousal, and a stronger racial identity predicted less.…”

“…The assays were performed using an Orion Diagnostica kit (Espoo, Finland), which has been validated in previous studies on nonhuman primates [e.g., Fuchs et al, 1997;Boyce et al, 1995] and humans [e.g., Keenan et al, 2002]. Saliva samples (25 ml) were pipetted into Wasserman tubes, to which 75 ml of buffer was added, followed by 100 ml of 125 I-cortisol and 100 ml of antiserum.…”
