Patterns of Gene Flow and Genetic Divergence in the Northeastern Pacific Clinidae (Teleostei: Blennioidei), Based on Allozyme and Morphological Data

Abstract: Genetic relationships and distribution patterns among populations, subspecies, and species of northeastern Pacific myxodin clinids were analyzed from allozyme data. The most recent revision recognized six species and 12 subspecies in two genera, Heterostichus and Gibbonsia. Allozymes from 40 gene loci from all 12 nominal taxa were analyzed to compare heterozygosity levels, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium conformance, genetic distances, and phylogenetic relationships. Sample sites ranged from Carmel, California, to … Show more

“…Similar studies were made by Rosenblatt andParr (1967, 1969) for the genus Paraclinus; Stepien and Rosenblatt (1991) for Gibbonsia and Heterostichus;and Bath (2008) for the genus Parablennius, where some subspecies were raised to species and some others were recognized as synonyms (Hastings and Springer 2009). Nonetheless, the use of additional tools is required (e.g., geometric morphometrics and genetic or molecular analyses) to come to any further conclusions on these particular cases.…”

“…Data from all relevant studies were analysed using sign tests (see below). Marine species were excluded as island populations belong to the same continuous habitat over which they often disperse widely (Stepien & Rosenblatt, 1991;Fevolden, 1992). All data were on independent populations, apart from those for Peromyscus polionotus where the same two island populations were studied by , Garten (1976) and Brewer et a!.…”

“…Since this statement by Endler (1977), relatively few studies have evaluated the role of population disjunction on speciation mechanisms for marine organisms (e.g., Stepien and Rosenblatt 1991;Palumbi 1994;Burton 1998;Hellberg 1998). The main reason for the paucity of studies in this area is that only in rare circumstances are the combination of biological and chronological data available.…”
