PDGF isoforms induce and maintain anagen phase of murine hair follicles

Abstract: SummaryBackground: It is known that platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors are expressed in hair follicle (HF) epithelium. Objectives:The aim of the present study was to clarify the effects of PDGF-AA and -BB on the cyclic growth of HFs.Methods: PDGF-AA or -BB was injected into the dorsal skin of C3H mice during the second telogen phase once daily for five consecutive days, or PDGF-AA or -BB dissolved in hyaluronic acid was injected only once. In order to confirm the effects of different PDGF isofo… Show more

“…In a VEGF-transgenic mouse model, VEGF controlled hair growth and follicle size by the modulation of angiogenesis (30). PDGF isoforms induce and maintain the anagen phase in murine hair follicles (27). HGF and IGF also up-regulate hair follicle growth in various systems (9,20,26,29).…”

“…Proinflammatory cytokines or growth factors released after plucking may be responsible for anagen phase induction. For instance, PDGF, a potent chemotactic agent for macrophages, is known to activate the growth of telogen follicles (49). We recently found that NFI-C is involved in the inflammatory phase of the skin healing process (9).…”

“…Postnatal PDGF-A-null mice show progressive loss of dermal mesenchyme and reduced hair development . Conversely, dermal injection of PDGF-AA or PDGF-BB in mice triggers resting hair follicles to enter the hair growth cycle (Tomita et al 2006). The role of PDGF-A in the developing skin appears to be to secure the renewal of PDGFR-␣-positive mesenchymal cells that are consumed as they are recruited to hair follicles to become dermal papillae and dermal sheaths ( Fig.…”
