Splenic lymphangioma is a rare malformation of the splenic lymphatic channels, mostly seen in children. It is characterized by the presence of cysts, resulting from increases in the size and number of thin-walled lymphatic vessels that are abnormally interconnected and dilated. The condition may be restricted to the spleen, but in most cases it involves multiple organs (systemic lymphangiomatosis). The clinical picture is variable; small lesions are often incidentally detected through imaging studies, while larger lesions can result in compression of organs, causing pain or rupture even after minor trauma. Therefore, splenic lymphangiomas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of splenomegaly or left upper quadrant pain even among adults and should be immediately treated with splenectomy; delay in the therapeutic intervention can lead to life-threatening complications.

ResumoO linfangioma é uma patologia relativamente freqüente na criança. A localização abdominal é, entretanto, rara. Sua forma de apresentação e suas manifestações clínicas variam muito, sendo confundida com outras patologias abdominais. A ultrasonografia pode fazer o diagnóstico na maioria dos casos. O tratamento é cirúrgico e o prognóstico é, em geral, bom.Os autores mostram a experiência em oito casos ao longo de quinze anos, tratados cirurgicamente e com bons resultados em sete casos e um óbito tardio. AbstractLymphangioma is a common pathology in children, however intra-abdominal cystic lymphangioma is rare. Morphology and clinical symptoms are variable and can be mixed up with other ethiology. Ultrasound can make the diagnosis in the majority of the cases. Surgery is the best choice of treatment and prognosis is in general good.Authors present eight cases in a period of fifteen years, all of them treated surgically. Results were good in seven cases. One late death was observed.
