Pediatric Residents' Performance of Ankle and Knee Examinations After an Educational Intervention

Abstract: The residents' performance of ankle and knee examinations was suboptimal at baseline and improved significantly after the teaching intervention. Observed improvements persisted for a mean of 35 weeks. The teaching intervention described in this study could meet the need for improved ankle and knee examination skills, the 2 most common sites of skeletal injury in young athletes. The teaching model is novel in that it couples videotape and skills-based teaching methods with reliable evaluation methods. This mode… Show more

“…14 Educational intervention has been shown to improve performance and knowledge of musculoskeletal problems at the resident and medical student levels as well as in the practicing pediatrician. 15,16 Unfortunately, in as little as 9 months postintervention, the effects are lost with no continuing teaching on the subject of musculoskeletal medicine. 15 A better understanding of the natural history of a musculoskeletal process will allow the primary care provider to discuss the diagnosis with the parents and prevent delay in treatment, if needed, and avoid referral to the wrong specialist.…”

“…In Canada, where medical curriculums have been previously found to devote only 2.26% to musculoskeletal teaching (11), undergraduate medical educators have recently considered the implementation of mandatory musculoskeletal clinical rotations. Such rotations, as well as brief educational interventions, have been shown to significantly improve comfort in performing a proper physical examination (12) and overall competency in musculoskeletal medicine (13,14).Due to the decline in accessibility to orthopedic care in Canada over the past decade and growing concern for reducing health care expenses, we conducted a retrospective cross sectional study over two time periods to quantify the proportion of physiological referrals sent to paediatric orthopedic surgeons from the largest referral base, primary care physicians and paediatricians. We chose two eightmonth periods for analysis to account for changes in annual referral trends.…”

“…De noodzaak van en behoefte aan aanvullende training en intensiever onderwijs op dit gebied is de laatste jaren veelvuldig gerapporteerd. [4][5][6][7][8] In Groningen wordt sedert 1994 in de huisartsopleiding wel specifieke aandacht geschonken aan dit onderdeel van het brede vakgebied huisartsgeneeskunde. Er wordt aan alle eerstejaars huisartsen in opleiding (haio's) een zogenaamde 'bewegingsdriedaagse' aangeboden.…”
