Pedometer Steps-Per-Minute, Moderate Intensity, and Individual Differences in 12- to 14-Year-Old Youth

Abstract: Background:Researchers have noted both the utility and limitations of using pedometers to measure physical activity (PA). While these unobtrusive devices are widely accepted for their ability to measure accumulated PA, they have been criticized for their inability to measure exercise intensity. However, recent steps-per-minute (SPM) research provides reasonably accurate measures of intensity allowing users to assess time spent at recommended PA levels. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the … Show more

“…Four controlled studies have been conducted with healthy young people [32-35]. The series of studies conducted by Scruggs and colleagues [36-41] were not considered here since they focus on steps detected specifically during physical education classes, which would logically include at least some sedentary time (e.g., for instruction, class management, etc.…”

“…This instrument measures the total number of steps (TNS), the number of steps in moderate physical activity (NS-MPA) and the duration, in minutes, of physical activity performed at moderate intensity. Physical activity of moderate intensity is defined as the period during which a child takes at least 110 steps per minute [25]. The accelerometer captures data from this type of movement.…”

“…In this issue, an approach to analyzing accelerometer data is explored. 22 With regards to pedometry, in this supplement Vincent Graser et al 23 explores individual differences associated with steps recorded from a pedometer, and Brusseau et al 24 explores variation in step counts among elementary age children throughout the school day.…”
