“…The idea is to evolve from a classical 'accept-or-reject' bimodal decision after peer review, to provide instead a reviewer-based assessment of research findings, with the option of version-controlled improvement of the manuscript. Using this approach, the publisher hopes to "combine the immediacy and openness of preprints with the scrutiny of peer review by experts" 14, 15 . “…eLife announced on October 20, 2022 that it would abandon its role as a gatekeeper and publish all peer-reviewed manuscripts with reviewer comments. 7 This announcement means that readers can determine the value of each manuscript for themselves by reading the main text and the reviewers' comments. This is one of the most extreme open peer review policies.…”

“…eLife recently announced that, from early 2023 onward, it would eliminate accept/reject decisions after peer review. Under this new model every manuscript that is sent for peer review will be published as a ‘reviewed preprint’ on the eLife website: this will include the preprint, public reviews by the eLife reviewers, and an eLife assessment written by the editor and reviewers ( Eisen et al, 2022 ). This assessment will be based on a common vocabulary to provide a succinct, balanced assessment of the significance of the findings and the strength of the evidence reported in the manuscript.…”
