Pelagic-benthic coupling on the shelf of the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas. II. Benthic community structure

Abstract: Benthic fauna abundance, biomass and diversity were investigated in the northern Bering and Chukchi Seas to determine factors influencing faunal distribution in this polar region. The hypothesis tested whether s e b m e n t grain size and water mass charactenstics, such as organic carbon supply to the benthos and temperature, are regulating factors in benthic community structure.

“…comm.). The high values in peracarid abundance and in chlorophyll incorporation into the sediment found at Stn 179 might indicate the impact of epibenthic peracarids on bioturbation processes in this area (Grebmeier & McRoy 1989, Brandt 1993, Brandt & Piepenburg 1994. The incongruence in our findings concerning the lower abundance of peracarids in the south, where the chlorophyll incorporation and biological activity (ATP measurements) are not strikingly lower, might indicate a greater abundance of smaller meiobenthic organisms in the south, which could lead to a most rapid incorporation of organic matter into the sediment by bioturbation processes.…”

In the Pechora Sea open-sea areas the environmental conditions are typically more stable than in the highly varying coastal areas, which are affected by seasonal variations in ice scouring, freshwater discharge and temperature.…”

“…In these ecosystems the spatial patterns of the communities are well known (e.g. Hughes et al 1972, Maurer & Leathem 1980, Grebmeier et al 1988, 1989. In contrast, tropical shelf ecosystems are less understood despite their quantitative significance -they comprise nearly one-third of the sea shelf.…”
