Pelagic‐benthic coupling: Profundal benthic community response to spring diatom deposition in mesotrophic Lake Erken

Abstract: Phytodetrital sedimentation, bacterial activity in sediments, and benthic macro-and meiofauna abundance were measured to calculate a carbon budget for pelagic-benthic coupling in Lake Erken. Bacterial activity in surficial sediment was limited by temperature in spring, although a significant correlation with the input of spring-bloom phytodetritus was noted. Population dynamics of benthic meiofauna during a period of increased food availability in spring were highly taxon-specific and closely correlated to fee… Show more

“…Phytoplankton sedimenting onto a reservoir bottom is a favorite food for Chironomus. The diatoms that, in spring, constitute a major proportion of the phytoplankton in rivers feeding Zegrzyński Reservoir (Bubień 1989) exhibit a very high nutritive value, because of high concentrations of unsaturated fatty acids (Johannson and Beaver 1983, Rasmussen 1984, Goedkoop and Johnson 1996, Ahlgren et al 1997, Goedkoop et al 2000. A continuous supply of sedimenting tripton, rich in diatoms, is probably the main cause of the high numbers of Chironomus observed during the spring peak.…”

“…Similarly to Lake Balaton, contemporary winter cohorts were found in Procladius spp. in Lake Erken (Goedkoop & Johnson 1996). (7) In T. punctipennis two generations per year with two parallel winter cohorts were found in the Neusiedler See (Wolfram 1996), two to three generations in Lake Banyoles (Prat & Rieradevall 1995) and one to two in Essendon ponds (Learner & Potter 1974).…”

“…However, benthic and pelagic energy flows and processes can be coupled in a variety of ways (Goedkoop and Johnson 1996, Schindler and Scheuerell 2002, Vander Zanden et al 2006. Fish often play an important role in combining benthic and pelagic food webs due to their high mobility and flexible foraging tactics that lead to inter-habitat omnivory (Diehl 1995, Jeppesen et al 1997, Post et al 2000.…”

“…A possible explanation is that profundal zoobenthos and zooplankton have a unique d 13 C value that reflect their diet of settling phytoplankton, though they can not easily be differentiated using d 15 N (Vander Zanden et al 2006). However, under oxic conditions, sedimented organic matter produced in surface habitats and allochthonous organic inputs also allow the consistent development and high productivity of benthos in the profundal region (Lindegaard 1994, Goedkoop and Johnson 1996, Vander Zanden et al 2006. The energetic link of pelagic fish with the profundal food web may be important to the maintenance of pelagic trophic cascades, especially in deep lakes, because profundal prey provides pelagic predators with an additional energy source (Polis et al 1997, Vander Zanden and.…”
