Pelvic Inclination Angle and Hip Abductor Muscle Strength after Total Hip Arthroplasty

Abstract: Abstract.[Purpose] We investigated whether pelvic inclination angle (PIA) influences hip abductor strength and gait ability after total hip arthoplasty (THA). Additionally, we assessed whether preoperative PIA is useful as a predictor of hip abductor strength and ambulation ability after THA.[Subjects] Thirty-six women patients with unilateral THA (age: 67.9 ± 10.0; body weight: 56.8 ± 9.1 kg; height: 150.2±8.3 cm; BMI: 25.1±3.6 kg/m 2 )participated in this study.[Methods] We measured pre-and postoperative PIA… Show more

“…Third, no long-term follow-up measurements were recorded. Most of the patients with THA are discharged within 3-4 weeks postoperatively, and the greatest amount of functional improvement after THA is observed within 6 months postoperatively [ 16 , 17 , 27 ]. Therefore, the final measurement in our study was performed at 7 months postoperatively.…”

“…Leg muscle strength on the operated and nonoperated sides was measured using a hand-held dynamometer (HHD, Anima Co., μ -TasF1, Japan) during isometric contraction for 3 s with manual resistance. The HHD is a widely used, reliable, and valid instrument for measuring isometric peak force in studies of elderly patients or THA [ 6 , 16 , 17 ]. Positions chosen for testing were based on the previous literature [ 18 20 ] and considered patient safety for adherence to postoperative precautions after THA.…”

“…However, crossing the legs may cause rotation of the pelvis 11 ) , thereby causing problems in the lumbar region. Studies report that lateral pelvic tilt might result when the hip abductors are weakened 12 ) . When sitting with the legs crossed, one leg is placed over the supporting leg, and the leg placed on top is in a state of abduction.…”
