KGPAA Mangkunegara IX funeral ceremony has attracted much attention because he was the former ruler of Kadipaten Mangkunegaran Surakarta, Central Java and he died in the middle of activity restriction due to the pandemic Covid-19 in Indonesia. Pura Mangkunegaran has its funeral ceremony but it hasn’t been written in many textbooks. The religious and cultural aspect was included in that ceremony because Mangkunegara IX was a Moslem and also a Pura Mangkunegaran ruler. This article aims to describe the religio-cultural context of the funeral ceremony of KGPAA Mangkunegara IX. Using a qualitative method the study was provided with interviews and an audio-visual documentary to collect the data. The study found that during the funeral ceremony, there were many religious and cultural rites included, such as bathing, praying, and burying the late, wearing a Mataram royal palace as the funeral cloth, brobosan, the Javanese funeral song chanting, and tahlil. Some of them were done simultaneously while the other was not. This finding shows that the relationship between religion and culture is still being maintained in Javanese families with some adaptation due to the pandemic.

The concept of bebet, bibit, and bobot contain in the Serat Warayagnya manuscript by Mangkunegara IV, a poet and ruler of the Kadipaten Mangkunegara of Surakarta in the mid-19th century. Terefore, this Serat Warayagnya has been part of a modern Javanese literary work written by a Javanese priyayi. This manuscript is important to study considering that the term of bobot, bibit, and bebet is still popular among the people, especially the Javanese. The study using content analysis reveals that the concept of bobot, bibit, and bebet in Serat Warayagnya manuscript is related to four things that must be avoided in choosing a spouse/mate. Namely (1) choosing a spouse only because of his/her beauty; (2) choosing a spouse only because of his/her wealth; (3) choosing a spouse only because of his/her social status; and (4) choosing a spouse because of association and sweet seduction. In addition, it contains the concept of the noble piwulang value for young men and women to become human beings. It also contains the concept of tatariman (a mate given by the king) that is less relevant for today's life.

Indonesia's education is heavily promoting education on characters. Exploring the values of character as legacy of the previous generations can be done through scriptures. Of any genres of Javanese scriptures very rich in character values is the wulang script. One of the wulang scripts found in Surakarta is Suluk Candra written by Prince Wijil Kadilangu and stored in Museum Rekso Pustaka Mangkunegaran Library . This article tries to explore the character values in it and to contextualize it with today’s education. The method used in this study is principle working of philology and interpretation of texts.. The working principle of philology aims to produce a text edition, while interpretation aims to analyze the content of the text. The results of this study are as follows. Suluk Candra is a script containing Islamic values. At least this Suluk teaches four ethics that can be contextualized with the world of education in the current 4.0 era. The ethical findings are ethics to the king/ leader/ state, ethics to teachers, ethics to fellow human beings, and ethics to oneself. In addition to values of ethics, values of character education are also found in Suluk Candra. Those character values are relevant to the present days, including love of science, logical thinking, critical, creative, innovative, religious, honest, and nationalist.
