Penicillin resistant pneumococcal peritonitis in nephrotic syndrome.

Abstract: SUMMARY Two infants with nephrotic syndrome who developed penicillin resistant pneumococcal peritonitis while receiving penicillin chemoprophylaxis are reported and the problems associated with prophylaxis against pneumococcal infection discussed. It is suggested that penicillin prophylaxis may be hazardous in an environment in which penicillin resistant pneumococci are prevalent.Children with nephrotic syndrome are at an increased risk of developing peritonitis due to Streptococcus pneumoniae. The depressed i… Show more

“…Recent reports, both from various regions of the United States [2,3] and other countries [4] have documented the occurrence of serious infections in children due to penicillinresistant S. pneumoniae (PRSP) and multiple antibioticresistant S. pneumoniae (MRSP). Penicillin-resistant pneumococcal peritonitis has been reported in two infants with congenital NS [5], but not in other cases of childhood NS. We have recently cared for two children with NS who had invasive disease due to penicillin-resistant S. pneumoniae.…”
