Pentraxin-3 Serum Levels Are Associated with Disease Severity and Mortality in Patients with Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome

Abstract: The long pentraxin-3 (PTX3) is a key component of the humoral arm of the innate immune system. PTX3 is produced locally in response to pro-inflammatory stimuli. To investigate PTX3 levels and its use as a biomarker in patients with systemic inflammation, we developed a solid-phase enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay based on novel anti-PTX3 monoclonal antibodies detecting PTX3 with high sensitivity. The assay was applied on 261 consecutive patients admitted to an intensive care unit prospectively monitored with … Show more

“…Analyses were performed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 22.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, Ill., USA) and GraphPad Prism 6.0 software (GraphPad Inc., La Jolla, Calif., USA). Sample size calculation was determined by planned recruitment of at least 82 patients based on previous studies using the same analysis [19] as described in another article [13]. …”

“…Concordantly, Bastrup-Birk and colleagues describe an association between disease severity and PTX3 levels. Furthermore, using ROC-analyses, moderate statistic values for PTX3 could be found to distinguish between patients with SIRS and healthy individuals [54] . Thus, PTX3 should be considered as a potential tool to monitor disease severity.…”

“…Pentraxin 3 (PTX-3), another acute-phase protein that resembles CRP in function and a possible modulator of complement system has been used as the marker for disease severity in cardiovascular, inflammatory and infectious diseases [46] . Yoneda et al [47] measured plasma PTX-3 levels with ELISA in biopsy-proven NAFLD, based on the method of Brunt.…”
