Background Impression management (IM), as planned activities aimed at self-presentation adequate for the profession, have become the domain of many specialist disciplines. This phenomenon also applies to the academic community. Lecturers consciously work to impress students and each other to raise evaluation rates and their personal needs. The world of science is subject to cultural laws regarding achievement, especially in the face of new technologies through either portals for scientists or online communication to recipients of their knowledge, i.e., students. This article aims to analyze the impression management of academic lecturers as as they are perceived by students and in the opinions of the lecturers themselves. Research aims We posed a research problem concerning the determinants of impression management among students and in the opinions of faculty scholars. The literature review indicated three IM indicators by scholars: scientific prestige, image creation, and scientist image. Methodology Literature review and online surveys were used to collect the data. Findings The results point to the impression a scientist makes as being related to scientific prestige (publications, expert activities, scientific achievements). It turned out that prestige is significantly, though moderately, positively associated with image creation (r = 0.506; p < 0.001) and poorly positively associated with the image of the researcher (r = 0.311; p < 0.001). On the other hand, image creation is moderately positively associated with the image of the researcher (r = 0.493; p < 0.001). A positive relationship between variables means that the greater the image of a scientist and the better the creation of an image, the higher the rating of his or her prestige.

PurposeInstitutional and commercial web profiles that provide biobibliographic information about researchers are used for promotional purposes but also as information sources. In the latter case, the profiles' (re)presentations of researchers may be used to assess whether a researcher can be trusted. The article introduces a conceptual framework of how trust in researchers may be formed based on how the researchers' experiences and achievements are mobilized on the profiles to tell a multifaceted story of the “self.”Design/methodology/approachThe framework is an analytical product which draws on theories of trust as well as on previous research focused on academic web profiles and on researchers' perceptions of trust and credibility. Two dimensions of trust are identified as central to the theoretical construction of trust, namely competence and trustworthiness.FindingsThe framework outlines features of profile content and narrative that may influence the assessment of the profile and of the researcher's competence and trustworthiness. The assessment is understood as shaped by the frames of interpretation available to a particular audience.Originality/valueThe framework addresses the lack of a trust perspective in previous research about academic web profiles. It provides an analysis of how potential trust in the researcher may be formed on the profiles. An innovative contribution is the acknowledgement of both qualitative and quantitative indicators of trustworthiness and competence, including the richness of the story told about the “self.”

Examining the Impact of Brenda Dervin's Sense‐Making Methodology across Different Fields

Brenda Dervin's Sense‐Making Methodology has had a significant impact on communication, information science, and other fields, with over 18,800 citations on Google Scholar. Researchers over the years, including a recent ARIST review, have studied Dervin's work. However, prior research has not analyzed a single article to see how it has been cited over the years across different fields. In this study, we examine 50 of the 1,766 articles published after the year 2000 that cited her 1983 paper. The research question investigated is, “What is the impact of Dervin's Sense Making Methodology in the twenty‐first century in fields outside of information science?” We found that sense‐making has been applied to social media, academia, and health information seeking, among other related fields. The findings should be useful to scholars interested in information science and methodology. The study also shows that information science is not a siloed field and impacts other fields.
