“…To reduce enteral spasm during diarrheal diseases, Mentha x piperita L. might be an efficient treatment option based on three clinical studies in humans, demonstrating efficient spasmolytic activity comparable to butylscopolamine [ 85 87 ]. The underlying mechanism includes inhibition of smooth muscle contractility through the block of calcium influx by menthol [ 88 ].…”

“…The intragastric administration of l -Menthol (LM) was found to reduce gastric spasm during EGD and to be more effective than the intramuscular injection of butyl scopolamine bromide 2 6 . The use of LM as an alternative antispasmodic agent would increase the safety of EGD, even in elderly patients 7 , with a possibly better detection of gastric lesions . We have therefore used LM as an antispasmodic agent.…”

“…Among the non-elderly patients, those in peppermint oil group had a worse antispasmodic score than those in hyoscine butyl bromide group. However, among the elderly patients, those in peppermint oil group had similar scores to those in hyoscine butyl bromide group [9]. These data suggest that peppermint oil is useful as an antispasmodic during esophagogastroduodenoscopy, especially for elderly patients.…”
