PEPSI-feed: linking PEPSI to the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope using a 450m long fibre

Abstract: Limited observing time at large telescopes equipped with the most powerful spectrographs makes it almost impossible to gain long and well-sampled time-series observations. Ditto, high-time-resolution observations of bright targets with high signal-to-noise are rare. By pulling an optical fibre of 450m length from the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope (VATT) to the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) to connect the Potsdam Echelle Polarimetric and Spectroscopic Instrument (PEPSI) to the VATT, allows for ultra-h… Show more

“…The fibers will be illuminated directly by the same OAPs mounted symmetrically with respect to the collimating OAP, similar to the PEPSI-VATT focal station. 4 The calibration light will be fed directly into the focus of the first OAP mirror, using a 200 µm fiber from a calibration unit providing both flat field and ThAr light. All fibers will be of the same type, the Polymicro FBP fiber with 50 µm core diameter and octagonal cross-section.…”

“…Paper I in this series dealt with these spectra. A 450-m fiber feed (Sablowski et al 2016) from the 1.8m VATT was used for very bright stars on several occasions. We note that the VATT spectra consist of just a single target spectrum on the CCD because it is only a single telescope.…”
