Peptide YY: A Gut Hormone Associated with Anorexia during Infectious Diarrhea in Children

Abstract: Objective-To evaluate the effects of diarrhea on appetite among Peruvian children ages 12 to 71 months and to assess whether elevated plasma levels of peptide YY, TNF-α, and IL-1β contribute to anorexia in this population. Study design-46Peruvian children with diarrhea and 46 healthy controls underwent an observed feeding trial that was repeated when cases were healthy. Blood was taken from 30 cases Corresponding Author: Amy Beck, 414 Warren Dr. #3 San Francisco, CA 94131, Phone:(203) Fax: (415) . Reprin… Show more

“…High PYY levels have been linked to decreased appetite and food intake [7]. PYY is elevated in patients with malabsorptive disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease [8], celiac sprue [9], and infectious diarrhea [10], and in patients with anorexia nervosa and cancer in the absence of known GI illness [11], [12]. Dysregulation in PYY secretion could therefore be associated with decreased food intake and subsequent weight loss in a range of disease processes.…”

“…В работе A. Beck и соавт. уровень пептида YY в плазме здоровых детей составил 33,5 ± 16,4 мкг/мл, но сравнить с нашими результатами не представляется возможным, так как определение пептидного гормона проводили разными методиками (иммуноферментный и радиоиммунологический анализы) [19].…”
