ABSTRACT Malaria is a tropical infectious disease with high morbidity and mortality rates. In malaria, various kinds of haematological complications can arise, one of which is thrombocytopenia. Thrombocytopenia is most commonly encountered during acute malaria infection with varying degrees observed in both Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax infections. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the types of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax with the degree of thrombocytopenia in malaria patients at the Ratu Aji Putri Botung Penajam Paser Utara Hospital. This research is an observasional analytic study with cross sectional method. The data was taken by using purposive sampling method from the medical records of malaria patients hospitalized in Ratu Aji Putri Botung Penajam Paser Utara Hospital in the period of January 2013 - August 2018. Data analysis used the Chi-square test. Of the 310 malaria patients who were study subjects, 60,3% (n = 187) were infected with Plasmodium falciparum and 39,7% (n = 123) were infected with Plasmodium vivax. Most of the research subjects were male (95,8%) who were dominated by adults (56,5%). As many as 90% of malaria patients experienced thrombocytopenia with mild, moderate, and severe thrombocytopenia respectively 29,4% ; 56,6% ; 14,0%. Severe thrombocytopenia was more common in falciparum malaria patients (16,4%). The statistical test result for the type of Plasmodium with the degree of thrombocytopenia were p = 0,139. It was concluded that there was no relationship between the types of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax with the degree of thrombocytopenia in malaria patients. A Rare Case of Mixed Type Severe Malaria Co-infection with Dengue Complicated by Expanded Dengue Syndrome

Background Malaria and dengue are the most prevalent vector-borne diseases worldwide. Both diseases are endemic in similar tropical regions. Each infection has a specific mosquito vector. Hence, overlapping of the habitat cannot be easily available. In co-infection, the clinical features were more like dengue mono-infection than malaria mono-infection. Therefore, clinically, it is difficult to diagnose co-infection dengue and malaria. Case Illustration A 42-yo Javanese man, presented with 10-days of fever that was clinically and serologically consistent with symptoms of vivax malaria. Plasmodium vivax was found in the form of ring, trophozoite and schizonts stage at the thick blood smear examination with parasitemia index 84.410 parasite/µl. In the course of the disease, patients were found to have a mixed infection with Plasmodium ovale. The patients also experience complications of spontaneous bleeding, thrombocytopenia and worsening respiratory conditions leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) which increases suspicion of co-infection with dengue virus. Laboratory tests to enforce dengue infection are carried out with the results obtained positive IgG and IgM that indicate recurrent infections. The patient is then given the management of severe malaria and expanded dengue syndrome according to the Indonesia Ministry of Health of guideline. On the 11 th day of hospitalizations, the patients showed a significant cure rate and continuing ambulatory therapy with Primaquine 15 mg oral until day 14 th . Conclusion The incidence of heavy bleeding in malaria patients is very low. Thus, malaria patients who experience unclear fever patterns and heavy bleeding should be systematically investigated for suspicion of dengue virus co-infection.

Background: Malaria is an infectious disease with a high mortality rate. One of the complications of malaria is blood disorders. Hematological disorders such as anemia and thrombocytopenia are common in malaria infection. Resveratrol has been reported to have antimalarial activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of resveratrol in reducing the severity of anemia and thrombocytopenia in Plasmodum berghei-infected mice. Methods: The study began with parasite inoculation in mice. After the mice were infected, and randomly grouped into negative control, chloroquine 20 mg/kg (positive control), and resveratrol with doses 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg. The mice's blood profile was measured on day 0 and day 4 using a hematology analyzer. Results: The results showed that after administration of resveratrol at various doses, the number of RBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit and platelets was higher than the control. Conclusion: It can be concluded that resveratrol can reduce the severity of anemia and thrombocytopenia in mice infected with P. berghei.
