Perceptions and Responses of Diversified Farm Producers in the Northern Great Plains to the Early Stage of the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract: The initial months of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed unique vulnerabilities of the global food system with notable societal consequences, calling for the need to implement resilience strategies to support food security for all. The objective of this study was to elicit perceptions, experiences, and responses of producers of diversified farms in the Northern Great Plains of the United States to the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic toward identifying factors for strengthening the resilience of agricultural p… Show more

“…Production diversity, or the number of crop and livestock types raised on the farm, may have allowed farmers to pivot to alternative market channels and address new product demands during the pandemic, as detailed by ( Måren et al, 2022 ). These findings on production diversity align with research suggesting that higher levels of on-farm diversification support greater farm resilience ( Altieri, 1998 ; Ebel et al, 2022 ).…”

“…This study utilized a two-part survey that contained a tool titled COVID-19 Surveillance Community Action Network (C-SCAN) for Food Systems [ 12 ] and the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS) [ 13 ]. The C-SCAN survey is a transferable tool designed by Ahmed and colleagues [ 12 ] to evaluate the influence of food environments on food security resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and has been used in India [ 22 ] and the Northern Great Plains in the United States [ 24 ]. The survey contained six parts and elicited information regarding socio-demographic profiles, food sources, perceptions of food security aspects such as food availability, access, diets, household income, and farming and gardening systems.…”

“…Generally, the results of the research on farm resilience stress the significance of a broadly defined farm diversification (products, market, income stream) in coping with the COVID-19 crisis [31,[69][70][71]. Findings included the importance of long-term diversification strategies (the implementation of which started ca.…”
