Perceptions of Manipulation and Judgments of Illegitimacy: Pitfalls in the Use of Emphasis Framing when Communicating about CO2Capture and Storage

Abstract: The mitigation of climate change requires reductions in the amount of CO 2 emitted into the atmosphere. One way to achieve this in the short run is through the implementation of CO 2 capture and storage (CCS) technology. The viability of CCS not only depends on technical and regulatory issues, but also on public attitudes. Communication plays an important role in shaping these attitudes. This paper reports on two experiments performed to examine effects of emphasis framing in CCS communications, meaning that g… Show more

“…Thus, while a low level of knowledge could contribute to the formation of misconceptions and pseudo-opinions (De Best-Waldhober and Daamen, 2006;Wallquist et al, 2010;de Vries et al, 2016); one should not assume that these misconceptions or pseudo-opinions can be overcome (and acceptance guaranteed) by the simple provision of information.…”

“…Moreover, novel energy technologies encounter challenges when it comes to societal acceptance and adoption [6,9]. Potential users, for example, have difficulties to adapt their behaviors when this is required for adoption and optimal use [10][11][12]. Another problem related to the social dimension concerns the resistance to energy innovations-for instance by incumbents in the industry, governmental bodies, traditional energy suppliers, or by local communities-who perceive these innovations as disruptive or even threatening, and seek for opportunities to slow down or co-opt their development [13,14].…”

“…As indicated by Cornelissen andcolleagues (2011, p.1701), "frame" and "framing" have been used over the years in various fields. Framing is a linguistic, psychological and sociological concept, which is concerned with the construction of meaning (Cranmer, Bowman, and Goldman, 2017;Curran, 2017;Dahl, 2017;De Vries, Terwell, and Ellemers, 2015;Garcia, 2011). Goffman (1974, p.21) posits that framing is a schema of interpretation that enables individuals to locate, perceive, identify and label life experiences.…”
