Background: The present work aims to characterize the profile of patients with stroke treat at a hospital located in the Region of the Mata of Minas Gerais, Brazil, considering the findings of the clinical vocal tract, kind of stroke, age and gender of such patients. Methodology: To obtain data, the clinical profile of 133 patients with a clinical or tomography diagnosis of stroke was analyzed, and the results were presented in percentage. For quantitative data average and analysis the tests were done with associations that held χ 2 test, and for significance it was considered p < 0.05. Results: From the total of patients, 63 were women, accounting for 47.4% and the other 52.6% were males. Clinically, they were characterized with the highest percentage for ischemic stroke (89.4%) compared to the hemorrhagic type (10.6%). Most of them were referred for computed tomography (86.5%) and remained hospitalized for an average of 6.496 ± 7.372 days. Similar percentages were obtained in the analysis of the population in question, when considering if they had (54.1%) or not (49.6%) any damage in their speech, language skills or swallowing. There were different types of disabilities in patients with stroke. Men with an average age of 69.8 ± 13.9 presents mostly ischemic stroke, and the majority of patients with stroke had hemiplegia and abnormalities of the vocal tract, dysphasia, and aphasia. While older patients had an ischemic stroke and were presented with left hemiplegia, the younger ones suffered from hemorrhagic strokes that caused a disability characterized as right hemiplegic. Conclusion: Our results show important conclusions regarding the clinical evolution of the vocal tract of patients who suffered strokes during the period of the analysis, being useful 83for better comprehension of how the vocal tract from these patients evolved according to the kind of stroke, sex and age also allowing a contraposition with other future statistics periods available in literature. It can also be pointed out the difficulties in diagnosing the stroke and the concern with the immediate care, but not with its continuance or with its multidisciplinary approach, giving an evident life risk through dysphasia and the increase of permanent damage when there isn't an appropriate work done with the patients.

RESUMOObjetivos: Relatar um caso em que houve intervenção conjunta entre fonoaudiólogo e fisioterapeuta na reabilitação de uma paciente com acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico. Descrição do caso: Paciente de 48 anos de idade, sexo feminino, acometida por acidente vascular cerebral do tipo isquêmico, há sete meses. Apresentou-se com disartrofonia e alterações do sistema estomatognático e sua funcionalidade, comprometimento sensorial, parestesia da mão direita, diminuição da coordenação motora grossa e fina em ambos os membros superiores, dificuldade na preensão palmar e fraqueza da musculatura intrínseca da mão direita, diminuição da consciência corporal e da propriocepção. Foi submetida a 12 sessões com a periodicidade de uma vez por semana de tratamento fonoterápico e fisioterapêutico. Após as intervenções a paciente apresentou aumento dos tempos máximos de fonação; melhora da coordenação pneumofonoarticulatória, da qualidade vocal e do foco de ressonância vertical; adequação e modulação da loudness; modulação do pitch; melhora da coordenação motora grossa e fina, da sensibilidade tátil e dolorosa, da oposição dos dedos, da preensão palmar, da consciência corporal, da propriocepção e da postura corporal global; e aumento da força muscular dos membros superiores. Conclusões: A intervenção interdisciplinar da fonoaudiologia e fisioterapia proporcionou benefícios à paciente acometida por acidente vascular cerebral isquêmico, sendo que a mesma voltou a exercer sua atividade profissional e suas atividades de vida diária com efetividade e melhorou a comunicação com seus familiares.DESCRITORES: voz; fonoaudiologia; fisioterapia; reabilitação; acidente vascular cerebral. ABSTRACT Aims:To report a case of joint intervention between speech therapist and physiotherapist in the rehabilitation of a patient with ischemic stroke. Case report: A 48-year-old female was affected by stroke of ischemic type seven months ago. The patient presented with dysarthrophonia and alterations of the stomatognathic system and its functionality, sensory impairment, right hand numbness, decreased gross and fine motor coordination of both upper limbs, difficulty in grip and weakness of the intrinsic muscles of the right hand, decreased proprioception and body awareness. She underwent 12 sessions of speech therapy and physical therapy with once a week frequency. Linguistic abilities in major vascular cognitive impairment: a comparative study with Alzheimer’s disease

We assessed the linguistic abilities of multi-infarct (cortical) dementia and subcortical ischemic vascular dementia (VaD) patients and compared the linguistic performance of VaD and Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients. A total of 23 VaD patients, 20 mild AD patients, and 31 controls participated in the study. All were evaluated using the Arizona Battery for Communication Disorders of Dementia (ABCD). Neuropsychological testing was performed to ascertain that VaD and AD patients had comparable cognitive performance. Both dementia groups performed more poorly than controls in the ABCD measures, except for the comparative question subtest. Comparison between VaD and AD patients showed statistically significant differences only in the confrontation naming subtest (p < 0.05), where paraphasias and visual errors were the most prevalent. AD patients showed a trend towards more circumlocution errors than VaD patients (p = 0.0483). When compared to controls, linguistic abilities of VaD patients were impaired in all measures of linguistic expression and linguistic comprehension, except for the comparative question subtest. Linguistic differences between VaD and AD patients were observed only in the confrontation naming subtest.
