The use of alcohol and tobacco is related to several variables, which act as risk or protective factors depending on the circumstances. The objectives of this study were to analyze the relationship between emotional intelligence, resilience, and family functioning in adolescent use of alcohol and tobacco, and to find emotional profiles for their use with regard to self-concept. The sample was made up of 317 high school students aged 13 to 18, who filled out the Brief Emotional Intelligence Inventory, the Resilience Scale for Adolescents, the APGAR Scale, the Alcohol Expectancy Questionnaire–Adolescents, and the Five-Factor Self-Concept Questionnaire. The results revealed that emotional intelligence and resilience, specifically stress management and family cohesion, were significant in the group of non-users. Family functioning acts as a predictor for the onset of use of tobacco and alcohol. Positive expectancies about drinking alcohol were found to be a risk factor, and the intrapersonal factor was found to be protective. Both stress management and family cohesion were protective factors against smoking. Furthermore, cluster analysis revealed the emotional profiles for users of both substances based on self-concept. Finally, the importance of the direction of the relationship between the variables studied for intervention in this problem should be mentioned. Responsible use by improving adolescent decision-making is one of the results expected from this type of intervention.

BackgroundPrior research shows a link between alcohol use and problematic Internet use among adolescents. This relationship likely indicates a vulnerability to addiction; however, little is known about factors that may increase this vulnerability. One potential factor is social motivation. Adolescents often engage in Internet use and alcohol use as a way of connecting socially. This study examines the moderating effects of social motivation for Internet use on the relationship between problematic Internet use and alcohol use among adolescents.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was administered to 582 adolescents selected randomly from one middle school and one high school in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Participants answered questions related to demographics/background (including reasons for Internet use), problematic Internet use, and alcohol use. Hierarchical regression modeling examined the moderating effects of social Internet use on problematic Internet use and alcohol use, controlling for age and gender.ResultsSocial Internet use and problematic Internet use accounted for a significant amount of variance in alcohol use (R2 = .126, F(4, 575) = 20.77, p < .001). When the interaction term was entered, social Internet use was found to moderate the relationship between problematic Internet use and alcohol use (β = .525, t = 3.293, p = .001), and the direct effects of social Internet use (β = −.062, t = −0.663, p = .507) and problematic Internet use (β = −.129, t = −1.053, p = .293) were no longer significant.ConclusionThis study highlights the role that social connections may play in contributing to problematic Internet use and alcohol use among adolescents. Interventions aimed at preventing problematic and addictive behaviors among adolescents should address the role of social motivations.

“…Los hallazgos de este estudio permitieron conocer la situación actual de los estudiantes de Enfermería, donde se observó que la mayoría de los estudiantes aún viven con sus padres, lo cual concuerda con investigaciones previas (Trujillo-Guerrero et al, 2016); en lo concerniente al tipo de consumo se identificó que más de la mitad de la población reportó bajo riesgo, lo que coincide con estudios que indican que más de la mitad tiene un consumo de bajo riesgo; sin embargo, es relevante resaltar que gran porcentaje reporta un consumo de riesgo y perjudicial; estos resultados concuerdan con Alonso-Castillo et al (2018) y con Chacón Cuberos et al (2016). Con respecto al funcionamiento familiar, los resultados reflejaron que gran parte de los estudiantes de Enfermería que participaron perciben un funcionamiento familiar normal; estos resultados son similares a los reportados en otros estudios donde han encontrado que la mayoría perciben un funcionamiento familiar normal (Musitu Ochoa, Suárez Relinque, del Moral Arroyo, & Villarreal González, 2015).…”

Introducción: El consumo de alcohol es un grave problema de salud pública a nivel internacional, afecta en mayor medida a los jóvenes, por las consecuencias biopsicosociales que provoca. Objetivo: Determinar la relación que existe entre el funcionamiento familiar con el tipo de consumo de alcohol en estudiantes de enfermería. Método: Estudio cuantitativo, transversal, correlacional, muestra de 463 estudiantes. Los instrumentos utilizados fueron: Cédula de Datos Sociodemográficos y académicos, los instrumentos APGAR Familiar y AUDIT. Resultados: Respecto al Funcionamiento Familiar muestran que la mayoría de los estudiantes de licenciatura en enfermería perciben un funcionamiento familiar normal 80.0%, un 5.4% perciben un funcionamiento familiar grave. Respecto al consumo de alcohol el 59.0% de los universitarios presentó consumo sensato y un 22.0% presentó un consumo dependiente, se encontró que un 19.0% presentó consumo dañino de alcohol. Se encontró una relación negativa significativa entre el funcionamiento familiar y el consumo de alcohol (r2=-.117, p=.012).
