With the rapid development of wireless communications technologies, radio spectrum has become a type of extremely scarce resources in meeting the increasing demands for broadband wireless services. However, the traditional static spectrum allocation policy leads to severe spectrum underutilization and spectrum shortage problems. The cognitive radio (CR) technology can detect the occupancy of the spectrum and enable the dynamic spectrum access (DSA) to fill the spectrum hole caused by the static allocation policy, and thus has been widely recognized as an efficient approach to solve the above problems. The distributed cognitive wireless network (CWN), which does not have central entities, is one of the major networking architectures applying the CR technology. Correspondingly, the design of DSA in distributed CWNs is crucial, yet challenging, to increasing the utilization efficiency of the wireless spectrum with dynamically-varying occupancy statuses. In this article, we present a survey on DSA protocols for distributed CWNs. In particular, we first address the challenges in the design and implementation of distributed DSA protocols. Then, we categorize the existing distributed DSA protocols based on different criteria, such as spectrum sharing modes, spectrum allocation behaviors, spectrum access modes, the usage of common control channel, spectrum usage strategies, the number of radios, and spectrum sensing techniques. We also discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each category under diverse classification criterion. Moreover, we make a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art distributed DSA protocols using different spectrum access modes, which can be categorized into contention-based, time-slotted, and hybrid protocols. Through the study, we find out that most of distributed DSA protocols fall into the contention-based and hybrid protocols. In addition, the ongoing standardization efforts are also reviewed. Finally, several open research issues for the distributed DSA protocols are presented, such as spectrum handoff based protocols, spectrum prediction based protocols, adaptation of the spectrum-sharing modes, protocols with cooperative spectrum sensing, as well as distributed collision avoidance mechanisms.

Abstract-In this paper we present new results on the problem of finding the best channel sensing order for multi-channel Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) networks. We start with the general assumption that all Secondary Users (SUs) cooperatively sense each Primary User (PU) channel at one time. Then, the SU sensing results are reported to a DSA base station that schedules SU transmissions in order to maximize DSA network throughput. We then assume that PU traffic parameters are not perfectly known to DSA network and change over time, and propose a novel PU channel sensing order scheme based on the quality of PU traffic estimation. We adopt a maximum likelihood estimator to estimate the traffic statistics of PU channels and derive the Cramér-Rao (CR) bounds for the PU traffic estimation performance. Based on the CR bound and its Gaussian approximation, we analyze the impact of the estimation error on the DSA network throughput by computing a new metric called sensing order confidence, i.e., the probability that the best selected sensing order is not affected by PU traffic estimation errors. Finally, we formulate a convex optimization problem to determine the minimum number of PU channel state samples required for estimating PU traffic parameters after determining a certain constraint on the sensing order confidence metric to achieve the best sensing order.

In this paper, we present a new queueing model providing the accurate average system time for packets transmitted over a cognitive radio (CR) link for multiple traffic classes with the preemptive and non-preemptive priority service disciplines. The analysis considers general packet service time, general distributions for the channel availability periods and service interruption periods, and a service-resume transmission. We further introduce and analyze two novel priority service disciplines for opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) networks which take advantage of interruptions to preempt low priority traffic at a low cost. Analytical results, in addition to simulation results to validate their accuracy, are also provided and used to illustrate the impact of different OSA network parameters on the average system time. We particularly show that, for the same average CR transmission link availability, the packet system time significantly increases in a semi-static network with long operating and interruption periods compared to an OSA network with fast alternating operating and interruption periods. We also present results indicating that, due to the presence of interruptions, priority queueing service disciplines provide a greater differentiated service in OSA networks than in traditional networks. The analytical tools presented in this paper are general and can be used to analyze the traffic metrics of most OSA networks carrying multiple classes of traffic with priority queueing service differentiation.
