Performance Analysis of Multichannel Medium Access Control Algorithms for Opportunistic Spectrum Access

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, different control channel (CC) implementations for multichannel medium access control (MAC) algorithms are compared and analyzed in the context of opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) as a function of spectrum-sensing performance and licensed user activity. The analysis is based on a discrete Markov chain model of a subset of representative multichannel OSA MAC classes that incorporates physical layer effects, such as spectrum sensing and fading. The analysis is complemented with extensi… Show more

“…Only the C-MAC [25] uses the unlicensed channel as the dedicated CCC. As investigated in [19], the performance with unlicensed CCC is worse than that with licensed CCC because PUs' transmissions may block the unlicensed CCC for long time. In our discussions, the SRC-MAC [56], SMA [46], SYN-MAC [26], and DH-MAC [27], etc.…”

“…Recently, employing a dedicated CCC for the distributed CWN becomes a widely accepted assumption. The dedicated CCC can be implemented by two approaches, namely, licensed CCC and unlicensed CCC [19]. In most existing studies using the dedicated CCC, a licensed channel for the distributed CWN is assumed to exist to act as the dedicated CCC [20][21][22][23][24].…”

“…The transmission structure for each PU is assumed to follow a synchronous, slotted frame within slot time T , implying the activity for the PU is constant during one slot time [10], [11]. To enhance the detectability of the PU channels and to minimize the time spent on sensing, the SUs jointly sense one channel at a time via a cooperative sensing scheme [12], [13].…”

“…It is also important to note that there have been efforts to analyze a cognitive radio network from other perspectives using other performance metrics such as energy consumption [20] and throughput [21]. As the focus of this paper is limited to the cognitive radio network delay analysis, those other works are not discussed here.…”
