Performance Analysis of Power Saving Mechanism with Adjustable DRX Cycles in 3GPP LTE

Abstract: Long-term evolution (LTE) of the UMTS TerrestrialRadio Access and Radio Access Network is considered to ensure the competitiveness of 3GPP radio-access technology in a longer time frame. To minimize/optimize the user equipment (UE) power consumption, and further to support various services and large amount of data transmissions, a discontinuous reception (DRX) mechanism with adjustable DRX cycles has been adopted in LTE RRC_CONNECTED mode. In this paper, we take an overview of the DRX cycle adjustable feature … Show more

“…The effects of DRX cycles are observed by considering the timers, queue length and packet waiting times. In [36], the authors present an analytical model, which prove the LTE DRX mechanism has the ability to save more power than UMTS [28] DRX method.…”

“…We can use a semi-Markovian model to determine the numerical values of power saved in DRX mechanism. In [6], a semi-Markovian model is presented to save UE power for LTE networks as shown in Figure 2, which is used by [36] and [15]. This model shows that when the UE in the active state downloading the data, it consumes 0.5 Watt/TTI.…”

“…Secondly, the next generation WLAN, 802.11n, will have an ultra-high PHY data rate, so the data time will be very short compared to the DIFS and back-off time. Hence, the energy efficiency and throughput will be very low ( [55] [56] [58] [59] [60]), also because the data frame will be very short. In order to shorten the idle listening time, an intelligent idle listening is proposed and discussed in the latter subsection.…”

“…Various methods have studied power saving [6]- [8], [11]- [13]. In [11], an adjustable power management using a hierarchical cascaded power gating and a hierarchical multilevel clock gating was proposed.…”

“…With [6] provided a comparison of the energy saving mechanisms of 3GPP and 3GPP2. The work in [13] presented an overview of an adjustable feature of the DRX Cycle of the LTE DRX using a semi-Markov process. These methods did not consider various packet arrival patterns and scheduling behaviors of system in relation to power efficiency.…”
