Performance and financial consequences of stillbirth in Holstein dairy cattle

Abstract: Stillbirth is an economically important trait on dairy farms. Knowledge of the consequences of, and the economic losses associated with stillbirth can help the producer when making management decisions. The objectives of this study were to determine the effects of stillbirth on productive and reproductive performance as well as financial losses due to stillbirth incidence in Iranian Holstein dairy farms. Economic and performance data were collected from nine Holstein dairy farms in Isfahan and Khorasan provinc… Show more

“…Calf mortality is an important problem on farms. Economic damage on farms is due not only to calf loss, but also to a number of costs for additional veterinary maintenance of the cow (Mahnani et al 2018). Our data indicate that during insemination of the daughters of bulls AH1-C by bulls for service AH1-C, the stillbirth rate increases significantly, which is consistent with the data of Guarini et al (2019).…”

“…Stillbirth is an economically important trait for dairy cattle. Its occurrence is linked not only with the costs associated with the loss of a calf but also the costs associated with subsequent impaired productive and reproductive performance of cows (Mahnani et al, 2018). Thus, a better understanding of the biology underlying this trait and potentially reducing its incidence are important because it can affect the profitability of a dairy farm.…”

“…Stillbirth is defined as calf death just before or during parturition, or within 48 h after birth (Berglund et al, 2003). The financial losses are estimated to be $938 per stillbirth case in Holstein herds (Mahnani et al, 2018). The frequency of stillbirth events is an indicator of welfare shortfalls in dairy herds and must be controlled in the herds.…”
