Preventative measures, such as biosecurity and vaccinations, are essential but not sufficient to ensure high standards of health in pig production systems. Restrictive, barren housing and many widely used management practices that cause pain and stress predispose high-performance pigs reared in intensive systems to disease. In this context, antibiotics are used as part of the infrastructure that sustains health and high levels of production in pig farms. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global emergency affecting human and animal health, and the use of antibiotics (AMU) in intensive livestock farming is considered an important risk factor for the emergence and spread of resistant bacteria from animals to humans. Tackling the issue of AMR demands profound changes in AMU, e.g., reducing their use for prophylaxis and ending it for growth promotion. In support of such recommendations, we revise the link between animal welfare and AMU and argue that it is crucial to sustainably reduce AMU while ensuring that pigs can live happy lives. In support of such recommendations, we aimed to revise the link between animal welfare and AMU in pigs by analysing stress factors related to housing and management and their impact on pig welfare. In particular, we reviewed critical management practices that increase stress and, therefore, pigs’ susceptibility to disease and reduce the quality of life of pigs. We also reviewed some alternatives that can be adopted in pig farms to improve animal welfare and that go beyond the reduction in stress. By minimising environmental and management stressors, pigs can become more immunocompetent and prepared to overcome pathogenic challenges. This outcome can contribute to reducing AMU and the risk of AMR while simultaneously improving the quality of life of pigs and, ultimately, maintaining the pig industry’s social license.

Reduced and responsible antimicrobial use leads to a lower risk of developing antimicrobial resistance. Raised Without Antibiotics (RWA) is a certification label that is recognized in only a few countries, and it is often unclear what the specific criteria and characteristics of RWA farms are. The objectives of this study were to describe the criteria for a Belgian RWA program; to coach farms towards reduced antimicrobial usage (AMU); to assess if it was possible to obtain and maintain the RWA status; and to determine differences between RWA and conventional pig farms. Pig farms (n = 28) were visited three times for the following reasons: (1) data collection, (2) farm-specific coaching (2 months later), and (3) evaluation (7 months later). AMU was followed from before the start of the study up to one year after the last visit. AMU, biosecurity (Biocheck.UGentTM), and farm characteristics of (non-)RWA farms were compared. RWA was defined as no antibiotics from birth until slaughter. Pigs requiring individual treatment received a special ear tag and were excluded from the program. The status of the farms varied over time, and the distribution of RWA vs. non-RWA was 10–18, 13–15, and 12–16, before intervention, after coaching, and after one year, respectively. For the non-RWA farms, there was a reduction in AMU of 61%, 38%, and 23%, for the suckling piglets, fattening pigs, and sows, respectively, indicating that they were moving toward the RWA status. There were no significant differences in biosecurity status between RWA and non-RWA farms, but biosecurity improved in all farms throughout the study. RWA farms were smaller (median 200 sows) compared to non-RWA farms (median 350 sows). The 4-week system was used more in non-RWA farms, while the 3- and 5-week systems were used most often in RWA farms. This study showed that farmers could achieve and maintain the RWA status through farm-specific coaching related to prudent AMU and improved biosecurity.

The article presents data on the establishment of the effectiveness of intrauterine administration of the experimental herbal preparation Fit-O-Metrin based on extracts of thyme, oregano and barberry in postpartum endometritis in sows. Inflammation of the mucous membrane of the uterus is a fairly common disease of the genitals in sows, especially after farrowing, which often occurs against the background of viral infection due to bacterial or parasitic contamination of the uterus, as well as due to violation of veterinary rules of pigs and feeding poor quality feed, fungus and their toxins. In most cases, endometritis in sows secretes bacterial microflora and is treated with drugs to which the microflora is not resistant or use new broad-spectrum antibiotics, but it is known that they act not only on its microflora but also saprophytes of the vagina and its dorsum, turn may be the etiological factor of settlement in these organs of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Treatment of 20 sows of the control group was carried out according to the protocol adopted in the farm: Cobactan at a dose of 4 ml per 100 kg intramuscularly, once a day for 3 days, Dexafort at a dose of 1 ml per 50 kg, intramuscularly, once, Introvit in dose of 10.0 ml per animal, intramuscularly once, Catozal at a dose of 10.0 ml per animal, intramuscularly once, Galapan at a dose of 2.0 ml per animal intramuscularly, once. 10 animals of the experimental group to this protocol in the uterus was injected Fit-O-Metrin drug at a dose of 30.0 ml once. During the studies, the duration of exudate secretion after the end of treatment was taken into account and a sonographic examination of the uterus was performed, in addition, the nature of uterine secretions before insemination was taken into account. 30-35 days after insemination with the help of a sonographic device examined the condition of the uterus of sows to diagnose pregnancy or infertility. The prevalence of postpartum catarrhal-purulent and purulent endometritis among sows after farrowing was 25.0 %, purulent exudate was excreted in 30 % of sick animals, in the rest (70 %) purulent-catarrhal exudate flowed from the vagina. After using Fit-O-Metrin drug for postpartum endometritis in sows, the number of animals admitted to insemination increased by 55.0 % (p≤0.001), and their fertility by 34.4 % (p≤0.05).
