Performance Deterioration Analysis of the Used Gear Oil

Abstract: In the present paper, we have investigated the tribological properties and microstructure of the used gear oil theoretically and experimentally. The deterioration process of the in-service gear lubricant oils was also discussed. The viscosity and microstructure of oils running different mileages were analyzed by viscometer and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. In addition, the friction and wear behaviors of the friction pair of the GCr15 steel ball and disc were investigated using a… Show more

“…When they are used, they undergo physical-chemical transformations and oxidation, and need replacing. The formation of harmful oxygen-containing derivatives of hydrocarbons occurs through the initial stages of creation of hydro-and di-hydroperoxides [4]. They are subsequently transform to organic acids, low-and high-temperature sedimentation, coke substances.…”

“…Consequently, there is strong darkening of oils and deterioration of their physical-chemical and operational properties [5]. Specifically, there is an increase in viscosity, corrosion aggressiveness, acid number; there is a decrease in thermal oxidation stability and stability for the induction period of sedimentation; tribological characteristics become worse [4,6]. The most undesirable transformations occur to those motor and gear oils, which are used at elevated temperatures and in the presence of water and metals that are capable of generating a catalytic effect in the processes of oxidation.…”

“…8 One way to keep the machine parts in good condition is to replace the oil periodically, but is not a desirable solution as it will lead to the problem of increasing drain oil volume. 9 Therefore, a severe step has to be taken to reduce the dependence on crude oil energy resources and recycling or reuse of the drained oil. This will not only help in maintaining the ecological balance with reduction of harmful gas emissions such as CO 2 and other products but will also help in cost reduction of energy resources.…”

“…are the most important factors contributing to and accelerating the oil degradation process [ 2 ]. Therefore, lubricant and hydraulic fluid ageing impacts the performance of the machines, gears, transmissions or automatisms where they are being used [ 3 , 4 ], and often the degradation of the lubricant properties is the cause of downtimes and dramatic failures [ 5 , 6 ]. Consequently, the periodic change of these oils is a basic part of the maintenance program of the infrastructure operators [ 7 ], with an important impact on the O&M (Operation and Maintenance) cost, and different research and commercial efforts have been fostered trying to migrate to predictive maintenance approaches with the aim of minimizing oil change while assuring the safe operation of the infrastructure [ 8 ].…”
