The present investigation mainly focuses on overcoming the limitations of gasoline fumigation (GF) in diesel engines by adding up nano fuel additives. Experiments are conducted to ascertain the engine working characteristics in a single-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine using aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nano additives blended diesel as the main injection fuel along with GF as an inducted fuel. GF was achieved by controlling the electronic injector fitted at the intake manifold using open ECU software. Fuel map for GF was determined based on experiments with three divergent fumigation rates of 10%, 20%, and 30% based on energy consumption and optimized using the design of experiments. The optimization results showed 10% fumigation resulted in better performance and emission characteristics and it is selected for this present investigation. Fumigation results showed a decrease in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) at low and medium loads; increase at high loads.The two different mass fractions of 25 ppm and 50 ppm Al2O3 nano liquid are blended with diesel. Compared to GF with diesel, GF along with 25 and 50ppm Al2O3 nano additives blended diesel showed an increased BTE, maximum in-cylinder pressure, cumulative heat release rate; and reduced smoke opacity, CO, and unburned HC emissions at overall operating conditions. As the dosage level of Al2O3 increases from 25 to 50 ppm results in further enhancement of all working parameters except NOx emission. Finally, the addition of an Al2O3 nano additive is a suitable solution to overcome the limitations of GF in the CI engine.

This paper investigates the effect of ethanol addition and hot exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) on engine performance, exhaust emissions, and air-pollution damage-cost in a dual-fuel diesel engine. The ethanol is injected at low pressure into the intake manifold using a port-fuel injector while diesel fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. Only the duration of the ethanol injection is changed in the dual-fuel injection system while the diesel injection parameters are not changed. Ethanol fuel is added by port injection in such amounts as to provide additional heat energy in the range of 0–40% to the heat energy of the diesel fuel taken to the engine for any engine operating conditions. Moreover, 5%, 10%, and 15% rates exhaust gas recirculation (hot EGR) for each engine operating conditions are applied. The engine is operated at 1400, 1600, 1800 and 2000 rpm engine speeds at full load (≈40 Nm). In this paper, the highest improvement in engine performance and environmental factors is obtained with ethanol addition of 40% without the hot EGR at 1400 rpm. Under these conditions, the brake engine power ( BEP) and brake engine torque ( BET) increase of 6.9% and 8.1% while NOx emission and air-pollution damage-cost decreased of 32% and 23.9%, respectively. However, CO, HC, and smoke ( FSN number) emissions increased significantly. On the other hand, the brake thermal efficiency ( BTE) and brake specific energy consumption ( BSEC) are negatively affected by the ethanol addition and hot EGR.

In this study, an internal combustion engine is experimentally analyzed under 100 Nm engine load using biodiesel and diesel fuels. The analyses of energy, exergy and environment are also applied to the internal combustion engine without after treatment system (Engine-Out) and with silicon carbide-based diesel particle filter (SiC-DPF) after treatment system. The impact of the utilization of SiC-DPF on the exhaust emissions and energy, exergy, environmental analyses results are examined. It is determined that (1) the work rate of diesel-fueled engine is higher than the biodiesel-fueled engine. (2) When energy and exergy losses are taken into consideration, the use of SiC-DPF has a positive effect on the emissions of the biodiesel-fueled engine, but it does not have the same effect for the diesel-fueled engine. (3) The biodiesel-fueled engine has higher energy and exergy efficiencies than diesel-fueled engine with and without after treatment systems. (4) In terms of exergy destruction, the results of the diesel-fueled engine have the maximum value with the use of SiC-DPF after treatment system, while the results of the biodiesel-fueled engine have the minimum value with the use of SiC-DPF. This reveals the effectiveness of the use of SiC-DPF after treatment system. (5) The emission rate of CO 2 is obtained as maximum for the biodiesel-fueled engine. Also, the minimum CO 2 emission rate is determined for the diesel-fueled engine without after treatment system. The use of SiC-DPF contributes to a reduction in CO 2 emission for the biodiesel fuel, while it causes an increase for the diesel fuel. (6) The entropy generation rate of the biodiesel-fueled engine is lower than the diesel-fueled engine with and without after treatment options. This study could help future studies on the choice of fuels and utilization of after treatment systems in the internal combustion engines in terms of better environment.
