Performance evaluation of a low‐cost switched‐beam antenna for WLAN users

Abstract: W g is the critical factors to determine the upper operating frequency, impedance bandwidth, and impedance matching.ABSTRACT: This article proposes a low-cost switched-beam antenna using single antenna element for WLANs. This octagonal-shape antenna allows eight beam-patterns, which can be controlled by shorted-circuit terminations at different edges. The prototype of proposed antenna is constructed and tested to demonstrate its beam steering capability, compared with simulation results. Also the prototype is … Show more

“…The paper presented in [28], a rectangular patch which fixed size and fixed position of feeding point at the center, directions of main beam can be switched by shorted circuit at terminal edges. Also, an octagonal patch which fixed feeding point at the center, radiation patterns can be controlled by shorted circuited condition at end edges were revealed in [29], [30]. Moreover, the work proposed in [31], a compact dual band switched beam antenna which radiation patterns can be steered by controlling shorting positions at end edges.…”

“…However, there are some limitations of an antenna having directional pattern such as hidden node problem and sometime cannot be used in some applications. The works in [13][14][15][16][17] indicated the powerful antenna technology which provided the reduction of interference effect and increasing the signal quality at the receiving vehicle. Smart antenna has been proposed for a solution.…”

“…This is not considered practical as the feeding network is relatively complicated. The works of [7][8] have revealed a low profile antenna which is capable of beam switching in two directions and eight directions, respectively. They antenna is a simple structure using a single-layer printed circuit board.…”
