Performance Evaluation of a Waste Stabilization Pond in a Rural Area in Egypt

Abstract: Abstract:The performance evaluation of the waste stabilization pond (WSP) as a model of domestic wastewater treatment unit in rural area was carried out. The unit comprised of anaerobic, facultative and maturation ponds in two series. The effluents of WSP which are discharged in the drain had the BOD reduced to 109-245 mg L , 44.3% removal). The reduction percentages of total coliform (TC), faecal coliform (FC), E.coli, faecal streptococci (FS), salmonellae and Listeria were 98.8, 95.6, 79.4, 96.8, 97.9 and 89… Show more

“…COD/BOD 5 ratio in the input and output of the system were 2.07 and 2.05, respectively. Moreover, WSP performance in the treatment of the oil refi nery wastewater in different input phenol concentrations was better than that of Ghazy et al [20] study results. In the current study, the removal effi ciencies of COD, BOD 5 , and PO 4 by WSP were 29.63%, 28.38%, and 16.74%, respectively.…”

“…This trend is analogous to start-up trends observed in high-rate anaerobic processes applied to treatment of domestic wastewater at ambient temperature. While the linearity observed between TCOD removal and time demonstrates that the reactor has yet to reach steady state, the TCOD removal exceeds that observed during WSP studies operated over extended time periods and at higher mean operating temperatures (Ghazy et al, 2008;Picot et al, 2003). Toprak (1993) postulated that 25-40% TCOD removal could be achieved through physical settlement of suspended solids and was thus independent of biological degradation.…”
