Abstract-The term WiMAX is used to refer to a collection of standards, products, and service offerings derived from the IEEE 802.16 family of standards for metropolitan area wireless networks. A significant body of published research in the WiMAX domain exists, but the focus of much of it is on the use of analytic or simulation models to evaluate aspects of physical layer protocols, medium access control protocols, or proposed scheduling algorithms. It this paper we describe performance characteristics of an operational WiMAX testbed upon which we were able to conduct controlled experiments in the absence of competing traffic. We characterize latency, throughput, protocol overhead, packet loss, and the impact of WiMAX on TCP dynamics.

The WiMAX Reference Network Architecture can be used in point-to-point and point-to-multipoint network topologies, and is suitable for providing last-mile, building-to-building, and residential broadband connectivity. Another major application, and the main focus of this study, is the use of fixed WiMAX as backhaul for voice and data services. We evaluate voice over IP (VoIP) performance over a fixed WiMAX testbed and quantify the benefits from employing applicationand network-level aggregation. We examine such aggregation schemes using our fixed WiMAX testbed and report the results for both uplink and downlink. If we use objective mean opinion scores (MOS) as the main gauge of overall performance, application-layer aggregation appears to be the best scheme, allowing our fixed WiMAX testbed to sustain nearly three times more flows in the downlink and over two times more flows in the uplink than when no aggregation is used, at comparable MOS values.

Abstract-IEEE802.16 technology due to its outstanding larger coverage area, high data rates, inexpensive equipments, ease of deployment and guaranteed QoS make it a suitable candidate for future broadband wireless access networks. The Mobile WiMAX has been designed to provide Broadband Internet service to mobile users. The VoIP is flexible and provides low cost telephony to customers over the existing IP infrastructure. However, there are still many challenges that need to be addressed to provide a steady and good quality voice connection over the best-effort Internet. In this paper we evaluate the performance of different VoIP codecs over the best effort WiMAX network. The network performance metrics such as jitter, one way delay, and packet loss and user perception metric that is Mean Opinion Score have been used to evaluate the performance of VoIP codecs. The simulation is performed in QualNet simulator with varying values of Packet size, number of calls and jitter buffer sizes. Our results indicate that varying the jitter buffer size and packetization time affects the quality of voice over the best effort network.
