Solar energy is a clean and sustainable source of power generation. There are various industrial and domestic applications of Solar Air Heaters (SAHs), but their low thermal efficiency poses a challenge. To improve thermal efficiency, a novel‐angled corrugated jet‐impinging channel has been proposed for the absorbing plate of SAHs. A numerical study has been performed for four different arrangements of jets, i.e., single circular, single square, 2 × 2 square, and 3 × 3 square jet array with four channels, i.e., 30°, 45°, 60°, and 90° corrugated over the Reynolds number range of 1600–2700 for the jet to target plate range of 4.9–15. It is observed that multiple jets impinging increases the heat transfer significantly. The optimization has been performed by instigating the parametric study. Flow and thermal profiles are studied. The 45° corrugated target plate with 3 × 3 multiple jet impingement, 4.9 jet‐to‐target plate distance, and 2700 Reynolds number is chosen to have the best thermal efficiency. A Thermal Performance Factor of around 8 was achieved as compared to the base case.

This work uses CFD simulations to examine how absorber tube rotation affects parabolic trough solar collector performance, including output temperature, thermal efficiency, and surface temperature distribution. Simulation results are closely matched to experimental data, with variances ranging from 0.54% to 4.63%. It examines how mass flow rates (0.01 kg/s, 0.015 kg/s, and 0.02 kg/s) and input temperatures (32°C to 38°C) affect system performance in stationary and rotational modes at 1 and 2 rpm. Tube rotation considerably improves thermal mixing in the heat transfer fluid (HTF), resulting in more equal temperature distribution and possibly improved heat transfer efficiency. Increased rotational speed causes complicated dynamics that slightly impair thermal efficiency due to centrifugal forces affecting fluid flow patterns. The study shows that thermal efficiency peaks in the morning, emphasizing the importance of climatic and operational factors on collector performance. DOI: https://doi.org/10.52783/pst.276

Summary This study considers three parabolic trough collector models with rotating receiver tubes and elliptical inserts of two orientations and one with a smooth receiver tube. Hybrid nanofluid is considered as a working medium by mixing copper oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles in water. Computational experiments are performed with a 1% concentration in terms of vol. of hybrid nanofluids by considering a mixture of copper oxide and aluminum oxide nanoparticles in water (aluminum oxide 25%‐ copper oxide 75%, aluminum oxide 50%‐ copper oxide 50%, and aluminum oxide 75%‐ copper oxide 25%). Rate of flow for the simulation is considered to vary from 0.016 to 0.033 kg/s. Again, this study focuses on utilizing rotating receiver tubes with a varying velocity of 0‐15 rad/s to overcome the stratification of high temperature at the surface. Results show that enhanced values for the temperature at outlet, heat transfer coefficient, and thermal efficiency are noted for a model with elliptical inserts of major diameter 28 mm (longitudinal orientation) at 15 rad/s receivers speed for nanofluid‐1 (aluminum oxide 75%‐ copper oxide 25%) at 0.033 kg/s. The highest increment in heat transfer coefficient, as well as thermal efficiency for the model with a 28 mm major diameter elliptical insert (longitudinal orientation), is 44.21% and 29.21% respectively. Highlights Use of a spinning receiver reduces the problem of uneven temperature distribution at receiver surface. Maximum 375 K outlet temperature is noted at 15 rad/s for elliptical insert of diameter 28 mm (longitudinal orientation) at 0.016 kg/s. The elliptical insert received the maximum thermal efficiency rating of 82.03%. An elliptical insert in receiver increases pump work by 18.13% than smooth receiver.
