Performance Evaluation of Bone Glue-Modified Asphalt

Abstract: Asphalt is one of the primary materials that are extensively used by the pavement industry throughout the world. Its behaviour is highly dependent on the amount of loading and the level of temperature it is exposed to. Asphalt has been modified in the past with different additives to improve its high- or low-temperature properties. In Pakistan, temperature remains high for most of the time of the year; hence, asphalt binders with less susceptibility to higher temperatures are preferred for flexible pavements. … Show more

“…The temperature was maintained at 55 ± 1 • C inside the chamber for the loading time. This test temperature was selected to simulate the actual weather conditions of Pakistan [63]. An exerted wheel load of 700 ± 20 N at a rate of 52 passes per minute was applied on each asphalt slab lengthwise at a frequency of 26.5 rpm.…”

“…Animal bones after burning consist mainly of calcium and magnesium by 80 % and about 10% carbon and other substances, as Mohammed et al (2012) [20]. Ali et al (2019) [21] used traditional and dynamic rheometer testing methods to investigate the effects of adding Portland cement and waste animal bone on the characteristics of asphalt binder. The results demonstrate that adding both modifiers to the binder has a substantial impact on its characteristics.…”

“…These lignocellulosic materials were used for compression moldable wood particle boards, 25 rapeseed straws, 26 peat moss, 27 and 3D printable wood. 28 While the mineral materials were utilized for the casting of asphalt, 29 lime mortars, 30 or calcium sulfate, 31 and in concrete 3D printing. 32 The use of lignocellulosic fillers in composite materials has been widely investigated in recent decades.…”
